James Mangold’s ‘Swamp Thing’ Movie Receives a Terrifying and Honest Update from DC Studios Head

The Vision for the DCU and the Uncertain Fate of Swamp Thing

When the first phase of the DC Universe (DCU) was announced, James Gunn and Peter Safran presented a bold and expansive vision. This universe was meant to be more than just a collection of superhero films—it would include everything from traditional action movies to comedic features and even horror stories. Among the most intriguing projects was Swamp Thing, a gothic and eerie tale centered around the titular character, a human-plant hybrid. The film was set to be written and directed by James Mangold, who was tasked with creating a standalone addition to the DCU.

At the time, the project seemed promising, but as the DCU has moved forward with other films like Superman and Creature Commandos, news about Swamp Thing has been scarce. It has largely fallen behind the scenes, overshadowed by other high-profile projects. However, Gunn has not forgotten about this dark and mysterious character.

During an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, Gunn was asked about the status of several previously announced DCU projects, including Swamp Thing. The last update on the film came earlier this year when Mangold spoke about his creative process in reimagining the character’s lore. He wanted to find something new and fresh rather than being “handcuffed” by the existing storylines. Unfortunately, as of now, there hasn’t been any tangible progress on the script.

Mangold has been busy with other projects, including A Complete Unknown, which delayed work on his Star Wars prequel script. Despite these challenges, there are still discussions happening about bringing Swamp Thing to life. Gunn mentioned that he recently had a conversation with Mangold, though no script has been delivered yet. “He’s been distracted by his billions of movies,” Gunn joked, but he remained hopeful that the project could gain momentum soon.

With both DC and Mangold involved in numerous other projects, there is no immediate pressure to move forward with Swamp Thing. Recently, it was revealed that a Wonder Woman movie is being fast-tracked following the success of Superman. Additionally, Gunn is reportedly considering ideas for spin-off shows featuring characters like Jimmy Olsen and Mister Terrific. Other upcoming projects include Peacemaker Season 2, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and titles like Lanterns, Brave and the Bold, and Sgt. Rock.

The Legacy of Swamp Thing

Before Swamp Thing ever makes it to the big screen, it will have the chance to shine in a way that its previous adaptations haven’t always achieved. The character first appeared in 1971, created by writer Len Wein and artist Bernie Wrightson. Over the years, Swamp Thing has seen various adaptations, some of which have gone unnoticed, while others, like the 2019 series, ended too soon.

The comics feature two versions of the character, with Alec Holland being the most well-known. As a scientist, he created a revolutionary Bio-Restorative Formula, only to be killed by hired thugs who planted a bomb in his lab. When he ran into the swamp to douse the flames, the formula transformed him into a hulking mass of plant life, giving him control over vegetation. Mangold has described his version of the story as a Frankenstein-like tale, aiming to make it uniquely his own.

While the film is billed as a standalone story, it remains unclear whether it will integrate other characters from the DCU, such as John Constantine or members of the Justice League Dark. For now, fans will have to wait for more updates on Swamp Thing as the DCU continues to expand.
