James Gunn Expresses Desire to Bring Henry Cavill Back into the DCU
As David Corenswet steps into the iconic role of Superman in James Gunn’s upcoming film, fans of the DC Universe (DCU) are left wondering if Henry Cavill might still have a place in the new cinematic universe. While Corenswet has officially taken on the red cape, Gunn has expressed his hope that Cavill could return in a different capacity within the DCU.
Gunn recently shared insights into the decision-making process behind moving forward with Superman and how it affected Cavill. He described the situation as “terrible” and admitted that the timing was particularly difficult for the actor. “The day we were dealing with trying to figure out if we could take the job at DC Studios,” Gunn recalled on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, “the day the deal closed, all of a sudden, they were announcing that Henry was back. And I was like, ‘What is going on? We know what the plan is. The plan was to come in and do Superman.’ It was really unfair to him and a total bummer.”

When Gunn and co-chair Peter Safran were appointed to lead DC Studios in 2022, there was a significant shift in direction. “There was a vacuum at the time and a lot of people were… They had a take on what they wanted to do at DC and they were trying to force their way and it was just never part of the equation for [WBD CEO] David Zaslav. We came in, and that was really unfortunate. I’m like, ‘This poor guy.’”
Despite the challenges, Gunn emphasized that Cavill handled the news with grace. “He was an absolute gentleman and a great guy about it,” Gunn said. “He said, ‘The only thing I ask is that I’m able to reveal it myself as opposed to coming from you guys.’ And I’m like, ‘That’s a class act.’”
Although Corenswet has officially taken over as the Man of Steel, Gunn remains open to the possibility of Cavill returning in another role. “I talked to him about it on that day. I would love to put Henry in something,” he added.

With Superman marking the first entry in Gunn’s new DCU franchise, the storyline will begin with the ‘Gods and Monsters’ phase. This sets the stage for a broader narrative that includes other legendary characters from the DC pantheon.
Fans are eager to see how the DCU will evolve under Gunn and Safran’s leadership. The success of Superman will likely influence future projects, including potential roles for actors like Cavill who have already made a lasting impact on the franchise.
As the DCU continues to expand, the question of whether Cavill will reappear remains a topic of speculation. For now, Gunn’s comments suggest that while the door may be closed on Cavill as Clark Kent, it’s not entirely shut for his return in a different form. The future of the DCU is still unfolding, and fans can only wait to see what surprises lie ahead.
