Viral Moments and Strategic Conversations on the Field
During the first two Tests between India and England, clips of on-field conversations captured by the stump mic have become a hit among fans. These moments range from playful remarks, often made by vice-captain Rishabh Pant, to strategic discussions and friendly banter with English players. One such clip that recently gained attention showed Ravindra Jadeja seemingly declining an instruction from captain Shubman Gill, who then quietly returned to his position without protest.
The video, though not revealing the exact over, likely took place during the partnership between Ben Stokes and Jamie Smith. Gill, positioned at slip, appeared to signal Jadeja to adjust the long-on fielder’s position, possibly anticipating Stokes stepping out to target that area. However, Jadeja refused the request, leaving the young captain to accept the call in silence.
Gill said: “Jaddu bhai, usko bhi upar lelo yaar. Marne do ek aage badke” (Jadeja, bring him up too. Let him try hitting one by stepping out). In response, Jadeja said: “Usko udhar kuch kaam nahi hai. Atleast jaaye toh pakadne wala bhi toh hona chaiye niche. Khada toh udhar bhi kardo, but pakadne wala toh chaiye” (He’s of no use over there. At least if the ball goes that way, someone should be there to catch it. You can place him there, sure, but there should be someone ready to catch).
A Historic Win at Edgbaston
India made history at Edgbaston, securing their first-ever victory at the venue. They achieved this in style with an emphatic 336-run win, which marks their largest away victory ever. This result tied the ongoing five-match series at 1-1.
Shubman Gill played a pivotal role in the win, scoring 269 and 161 runs in the Test match—both are the highest scores ever recorded by a captain in a single Test. However, Gill acknowledged the contribution of Akash Deep, who delivered outstanding performance with match figures of 10/187 (4/88 and 6/99). This performance broke Chetan Sharma’s long-standing record of 10/188 for the best bowling figures by an Indian in a Test match in England.
In the post-match press conference, Gill reflected on the game: “Yesterday, I think, getting through the top order is never easy. The spell of Akash Deep, how he got those two wickets, kind of gave the confidence to everyone that we can win this Test match. When he came in this morning with the ball hitting the cracks, yes, the ball was seaming, the odd ball seaming, that’s what really instilled the confidence in all of the players that, yes, we can do it.”
Looking Ahead to the Third Test
The third Test match will begin on Thursday, July 10, at Lord’s. Fans around the world are eagerly awaiting this next encounter, as both teams aim to gain the upper hand in the series. With the momentum on India’s side following their historic win, the upcoming match promises to be a thrilling contest.
