It Starts With Me 2: Atlanta Nonprofit Inspires Kids to Move by Giving Away Shoes

Promoting Health and Community: Atlanta Officer and Husband Lead by Example

In a heartwarming display of community service, Atlanta Police Officer Dawana Davis and her husband Damon Davis have dedicated themselves to improving the lives of local families through their nonprofit organization, It Starts With Me 2. Their mission is simple yet powerful: inspire healthy living from an early age and make wellness accessible for all.

Partnering with the Police Athletic League, the couple recently hosted a vibrant event in a northwest Atlanta gymnasium. Children of all ages gathered for a day packed with physical activity, encouragement, and fun. The goal? To show kids that being active doesn’t have to be boring or intimidating—it can actually be exciting when done with friends and family.

Tackling Childhood Obesity Through Fun and Fitness

Childhood obesity remains a pressing concern in many communities, and the Davises are determined to address it head-on. They believe instilling healthy habits early on can set children on a lifelong path of wellness.

“We know that obesity is a major issue in our community,” said Dawana Davis. “That’s why we focus on reaching kids at a young age so they can carry these healthy habits into adulthood.”

Damon Davis echoed this sentiment, noting how modern lifestyles—filled with screens and sedentary entertainment—have made it harder for kids to stay active.

“Kids today aren’t as physically engaged as they used to be,” he explained. “We wanted to create something that gets people moving and connects them with their families and neighbors.”

Making Exercise Enjoyable for Everyone

The nonprofit’s programs are designed to break down barriers that often discourage people from exercising. By incorporating music, games, and interactive activities, the Davises ensure that fitness feels more like play than work.

“We want everyone to have fun,” Dawana said. “A lot of adults dread going to the gym or struggle to get motivated. We try to change that mindset by making exercise enjoyable, especially for kids who are just forming their habits.”

On the day of the event, not only were children encouraged to move and sweat, but they also received free pairs of shoes to support their active lifestyles. For many families, this small gift made a big difference.

“It’s a great feeling to give back,” Dawana added. “Who doesn’t love getting a free pair of shoes? Especially when parents don’t have to spend extra money on them. These can be used for school, sports, or just running around outside.”

Leading by Example with the 5K Run, Walk, and Stroller Roll

This summer, It Starts With Me 2 will host its flagship annual event: the 5K Run, Walk, and Stroller Roll. Scheduled for July 12 on the campus of Riverside Epicenter near Six Flags, the event welcomes runners, walkers, and parents pushing strollers—an idea born from personal experience.

“When I had my child and was trying to get back into shape, I realized there weren’t many races that allowed strollers,” Dawana shared. “So we created this event so parents could lead by example while staying active with their little ones.”

The inclusive nature of the event reflects the Davises’ broader philosophy: health should be a family affair. By encouraging participation across generations, they hope to spark lasting lifestyle changes.

“I’m hoping we can instill these values in kids while they’re still young,” Damon said. “If they grow up seeing fitness as a normal, enjoyable part of life, they’ll continue those habits—and maybe even pass them on to their own families someday.”
