Israeli Forces Launch First Ground Attack in Central Gaza City of Deir al-Balah

Escalation of Conflict in Deir al-Balah

The Israeli military has initiated a ground operation in the central Gaza city of Deir al-Balah on Monday, deploying tanks and following a series of aerial strikes. This marks the first significant ground action in the city since the Israel-Hamas conflict began in 2023. The operation is being supported by continuous air raids from the Israeli Air Force, intensifying the already dire situation in the region.

Eyewitnesses reported that massive airstrikes hit the city overnight into Monday, making it one of the last areas in the Gaza Strip to remain relatively undamaged. The city has become a refuge for thousands of Palestinians who have been displaced from southern Gaza. It also serves as a critical point for aid distribution due to its strategic location, although the delivery of supplies remains inconsistent and unreliable.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has raised concerns about the potential impact of the military operation in Deir al-Balah. Following the Israeli military’s evacuation orders issued on Sunday, OCHA warned that the displacement order has further strained the already fragile humanitarian situation in the region.

“OCHA warns that today’s mass displacement order issued by the Israeli military has dealt yet another devastating blow to the already fragile lifelines keeping people alive across the Gaza Strip,” the agency stated in a release. “With this latest order, the area of Gaza under displacement orders or within Israeli-militarised zones has risen to 87.8%, leaving 2.1 million civilians squeezed into a fragmented 12% of the Strip, where essential services have collapsed.”

Despite the escalating tensions, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) have not yet provided an official statement regarding the objectives of the current operation. However, Israeli sources have indicated that the IDF has avoided targeting Deir al-Balah for some time, suspecting that Hamas might be holding hostages there. The militant group is still believed to be holding 50 captives in Gaza, with at least 20 of them presumed to be alive.

Increasing Civilian Casualties

The new military operation follows what was described as the deadliest day for aid-seekers in over 21 months of conflict. On Sunday, at least 85 Palestinians were killed while attempting to access food, according to local and UN officials. The highest number of casualties was reported in northern Gaza, where conditions are particularly dire. At least 70 Palestinians lost their lives while trying to reach aid through the Zikim crossing with Israel, as reported by health officials.

The UN World Food Programme noted that 25 trucks carrying aid had entered the region for “starving communities” but encountered large crowds. The Israeli military stated that soldiers fired warning shots at a gathering of thousands of Palestinians in northern Gaza, citing a threat. They acknowledged some casualties but dismissed reports of higher numbers as exaggerated.

Humanitarian Crisis Deepens

As the conflict continues, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza worsens. The displacement of millions of people, the collapse of essential services, and the ongoing violence have created a desperate situation for civilians. Aid deliveries remain inconsistent, and the lack of safe passage for relief efforts exacerbates the suffering.

The international community has expressed growing concern over the escalating violence and its impact on civilians. Reports of daily child deaths and the continued presence of hostages highlight the urgent need for a resolution to the conflict. As the situation in Deir al-Balah unfolds, the focus remains on the safety of civilians and the ability to provide life-saving assistance to those in need.
