Israel Strikes Lebanon: Beirut Car Blast and Southern Targets Hit

Beirut, July 3, (dpa/GNA) – The Israeli Air Force attacked several sites in Lebanon on Thursday, including a car in rush hour traffic near Beirut.

A dpa reporter reported that two missiles struck a motorway south of Beirut while many cars were on the road. Shortly afterwards, smoke was seen emerging from the burnt-out wreckage of a car on the side of the road.

One person was killed and three others were injured, the Health Ministry said.

The Israeli military said it had killed a “terrorist” near Beirut, who was working on behalf of the Al-Quds Brigades of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

He was said to have smuggled weapons for the foreign unit of Iran’s elite military force, and to have been responsible for terrorist attacks on Israeli civilians and soldiers.

An attack in such heavy traffic so close to the capital is unusual.

Shortly afterwards, the Israeli army confirmed another attack in Lebanon. The military said that the targets were military facilities, including weapons depots, belonging to the Lebanese Hezbollah militia in the south.

There had previously been Lebanese reports of a series of attacks in the south of the country.

Israel and the Hezbollah, which is backed by Iran, agreed to a ceasefire in November last year after more than a year of mutual shelling.

Their agreement stipulates that Hezbollah withdraw behind the Litani River, about 30 kilometres north of the Israeli-Lebanese border.

Nevertheless, the Israeli military attacks Lebanon almost daily, mostly targeting villages in the south and east of the country.
