The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the leading Muslim civil rights and advocacy group in the United States, stated that Islamophobia is ‘getting completely out of hand’ in Europe following the killing of a Muslim woman in Germany and the burning of a mosque during anti-immigrant protests in Spain.
A 26-year-old woman from Algeria, who was fatally stabbed in Hannover, Germany, had previously informed her family that she was experiencing racist slurs and harassment from her neighbor, the primary suspect arrested by the police.
Anti-immigrant protests have been taking place for multiple days in Spain. The Piera mosque in Barcelona was set on fire a day prior to its planned opening. Authorities are looking into the event as being linked to the riots.
In a statement, CAIR’s Deputy Executive Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell remarked: ‘We strongly denounce the brutal killing of a Muslim woman in Germany, which appears to be a hate crime, as well as the attack on a mosque in Spain amid anti-immigrant protests. Anti-Muslim prejudice is becoming increasingly uncontrollable across Europe, driven by the inflammatory speech and policies of both far-right and far-left politicians. European leaders need to act swiftly to stop this growing wave of intolerance and uphold religious freedom before this violence worsens and spreads further.’

He mentioned that CAIR has recently urged European leaders to cease promoting anti-Muslim hatred following attacks on mosques in the United Kingdom and France.
CAIR also urged French authorities to cease stoking the fires of Islamophobia following a report that an individual allegedly killed a Tunisian neighbor in southeastern France and severely injured a Turkish man.
