Iran confirms new nuclear talks with European powers: state media

Iran announced new discussions with European nations scheduled for Friday in Istanbul, according to state-run media, marking the first such talks since the U.S. struck Iranian nuclear sites a month ago.

Iranian envoys are set to engage with representatives from the United Kingdom, France, and Germany, referred to as the E3, following warnings from the three nations that penalties might be reinstated against Tehran if it chooses to return to discussions regarding its nuclear program.

Western countries and Israel have historically claimed that Iran is attempting to create nuclear weapons, a statement that Tehran has repeatedly rejected.

“Following the request from European nations, Iran has consented to conduct another round of discussions,” stated Esmail Baghai, a spokesperson for the foreign ministry, as reported by state television on Monday.

The topic of the discussions will be Iran’s nuclear program, it stated.

A German diplomatic official informed AFP on Sunday that the E3 were communicating with Tehran and stated, “Iran should never be permitted to obtain a nuclear weapon.”

“That’s why Germany, France, and the United Kingdom are still working hard within the E3 framework to discover a long-term and verifiable diplomatic resolution to the Iranian nuclear program,” the source stated.

On June 13, Israel carried out a series of unexpected attacks on its regional rival, focusing on critical military and nuclear sites.

The United States carried out its own series of attacks on Iran’s nuclear program on June 22, targeting the uranium enrichment plant in Fordo, located in Qom province, south of Tehran, along with nuclear facilities in Isfahan and Natanz.

– Kremlin meeting –

Iran and the United States conducted multiple rounds of nuclear talks facilitated by Omani intermediaries prior to Israel’s 12-day conflict with Iran.

Nevertheless, US President Donald Trump’s choice to align with Israel in attacking Iranian nuclear sites significantly concluded the negotiations.

The three E3 nations last convened with Iranian officials in Geneva on June 21 — only one day prior to the US attacks.

Additionally, on Sunday, Russian President Vladimir Putin convened an unexpected meeting at the Kremlin with Ali Larijani, a key advisor to Iran’s supreme leader regarding nuclear matters.

Larijani “shared evaluations regarding the worsening situation in the Middle East and concerning Iran’s nuclear program,” said Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov about the unexpected meeting.

Putin mentioned Russia’s “well-established views on how to stabilize the situation in the region and on the political resolution of the Iranian nuclear program,” he added.

Moscow maintains a friendly relationship with Iran’s religious leadership and offers essential support to Tehran, yet it did not strongly back its ally even after the United States joined Israel’s bombing efforts.

– Snapback mechanism –

In 2015, Iran and several global powers reached an agreement known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which imposed major limitations on Tehran’s nuclear activities in return for the lifting of economic sanctions.

However, the hard-earned agreement started to fall apart in 2018, during Trump’s initial term as president, when the United States withdrew from the deal and re-imposed penalties on Iran.

Several European nations have recently warned of activating the deal’s “snapback” provision, which enables the resumption of sanctions if Iran fails to adhere to the agreement.

Following a meeting with his European colleagues on Friday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that Western allies have “absolutely no moral (or) legal basis” for restarting the snapback sanctions.

He expanded on it in a social media post on Sunday.

“By their actions and statements, including offering political and material support to the recent unprovoked and unlawful military aggression by the Israeli government and the US… the E3 have abandoned their role as ‘Participants’ in the JCPOA,” said Araghchi.

That rendered any effort to revive the terminated UN Security Council resolutions “invalid,” he added.

“Iran has demonstrated its ability to counter any misguided ‘dirty work,’ yet has consistently been ready to engage in sincere diplomacy with goodwill,” Araghchi wrote.

However, the German source stated on Sunday that “if no resolution is achieved during the summer, snapback remains a possibility for the E3.”

Ali Velayati, a consultant to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, stated last week that there will be no fresh nuclear discussions with the United States if these are dependent on Tehran ceasing its uranium enrichment efforts.
