IPEAA Alumni Lecture: Exclusive Insights

The Industrial and Production Engineering Alumni Association of the University of Ibadan will, on Friday, June 13, hold its 33rd monthly lecture.

The lecture, with the theme, “Sustainable Infrastructure and Resource Efficiency: International Development Perspective,” will be delivered by the Chief Executive Officer of TracTrac Mechanisation Services Limited, Mr Godson Ohuruogu.

The virtual event will be chaired by the Head, Research Management Department, Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research, Prof John Adeoti, while the Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of Punch Nigeria Limited, Mr Adeyeye Joseph, will be the Special Guest of Honour.

The Guest of Honour at the event is the Principal, International School, University of Ibadan, Mr Y. Akintunde.

Speaking at a pre-lecture event on Monday, the IPE Head of Department and Host, Prof Victor Oladokun, said the initiative was a departmental drive to engage with industry leaders, academia and the larger society.

He stressed the importance of the gown-town relationship between institutions and society, emphasising the necessity of the idea to foster sustainable economic development in Nigeria, an initiative he noted the department was championing.

“What we’re doing in our department is to leverage our alumni, called the IPEAA, to reach the industry. We have graduated many people over the years who are doing fine as captains of industries and leaders in their own right. We are using them as the catalyst to get into the industry.

“The alumni lecture is just one component of this initiative that the department is pursuing. It’s an online monthly lecture and we have done it for 32 uninterrupted months,” Oladokun said.

He said the objective was to celebrate outstanding alumni. “We use that to motivate students and alumni against the notion that ‘school is a scam.’

“Many of them (young people) are confused. The things around them are not so encouraging, and we can’t blame them. It seems some of the values we try to tell them to embrace are not rewarding, and if we are not deliberate in trying to show them examples, we may lose this generation,” Oladokun added.

He encouraged the engagement team to mobilise for the event.

“We are inviting people from the university community and the general public,” he said.

PUNCH MD, Joseph, represented at the pre-lecture event by the News Editor, Dr Oladimeji Ramon, commended the IPEAA and the department for the initiative, noting the newspaper’s interest in anything geared towards nation-building.

Ramon said, “On behalf of the Editor-In-Chief and Managing Director of Punch Nigeria Limited, Mr Adeyeye Joseph, I want to say we commend the alumni association for what it is doing.

“It’s inspiring to see the array of people invited and the topical issues tabled for discussion. It’s something that, as a paper interested in the development of Nigeria, we like to identify with.

“The MD is honoured to associate with the department and the good things being done.”

The chairman of the event, Adeoti, appreciated the organisers and expressed his delight at chairing the event.

“Thank you very much for inviting me to chair this event. I want to thank Prof Oladokun. I thank our guest speaker for making himself available this evening,” he said.

Adeoti lauded the rich history of the programme, saying, “It makes someone like me know that for those of us who are optimistic about Nigeria, the IPE department is a major contributor to that optimism.

“Seeing the array of our young engineers that you have shown in those lights, and how they are making waves all over the world, I think it’s something highly pleasing to me and I thank God that industrial engineering is making such a laudable contribution to the economy.”

Latifat Oseni, who would be reading the citation of guest lecturers at the event, appreciated the guest speaker and every stakeholder contributing to the success of the upcoming event.

The Friday event will be moderated by Dr A.D. Adeyeye.
