Ionna’s EV Chargers Set to Launch at Major Gas Stations

Ionna and Wawa Collaborate to Enhance EV Charging Experience

Ionna, an American electric vehicle (EV) charging network, has announced a partnership with Wawa, a well-known convenience store and gas station chain. This collaboration aims to bring 400 kW fast chargers to Wawa locations across the United States, offering EV drivers a convenient and comfortable charging experience.

Starting next week, the first 400 kW fast chargers will be installed at Wawa stores in Daytona Beach, Florida, specifically near the Daytona Beach International Airport. Additional locations are already under construction in Brandenton, Pensacola, and Orlando, with more planned for the future. This strategic move is expected to significantly increase accessibility to high-speed EV charging for drivers in these regions.

Ionna currently operates over 200 charging stalls, with another 400 under construction. The company has ambitious plans to expand its network, aiming to have 30,000 DC fast chargers online in North America by 2030. This expansion includes 3,064 bays that have been contracted, highlighting the scale of Ionna’s growth and commitment to supporting the EV market.

Wawa, known for its family- and associate-owned model, has over 1,100 stores across 12 states. The chain is recognized for offering freshly prepared food, beverages, coffee, surcharge-free ATMs, and fuel. By integrating Ionna’s 400 kW fast chargers into its locations, Wawa enhances its appeal to EV drivers, providing them with a one-stop solution for both charging and refreshments.

The Ionna Rechargery on West International Speedway Boulevard is already operational, featuring 212 bays. With another 400 bays under construction, this initiative underscores Ionna’s dedication to expanding its infrastructure. The chargers at Wawa locations will also include canopies, ensuring that drivers can charge their vehicles without exposure to harsh weather conditions. Passengers can enjoy amenities such as drinks, meals, or restroom access while the car charges, making the experience far more convenient than some other fast charging stations located in remote areas.

Rich Makin, Chief Fuel Officer at Wawa, emphasized the significance of this partnership: “With an ongoing commitment to providing our customers with speed and convenience, our new collaboration with Ionna does just that. As we continue to expand our EV services, we are thrilled to provide our customers with a one-stop for fresh food, beverages, and EV charging!”

Ionna’s 400 kW fast chargers are designed to accommodate both CCS1- and NACS-equipped vehicles. Each dispenser comes with a Combined Charging System 1 cable and a North American Charging Standard cable, allowing a wide range of EVs, from the Tesla Model 3 to the GMC Hummer EV, to charge without needing an adapter. However, it’s worth noting that there are no CHAdeMO connectors, which means Nissan Leaf owners may need to use other charging networks.

Seth Cutler, CEO of Ionna, expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership: “We couldn’t think of a better way to achieve a key milestone than reaching it with Wawa, a host that allows our drivers to charge with ease and in comfort, knowing they’re being well cared for.”

Founded by seven automakers last year, Ionna has since expanded its backing to include BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis, Toyota, and Rivian. This diverse group of partners highlights the growing support for Ionna’s mission to revolutionize EV charging in North America.

This collaboration between Ionna and Wawa represents a significant step forward in making EV charging more accessible, convenient, and comfortable for drivers across the United States. As the EV market continues to grow, partnerships like this are essential in meeting the increasing demand for reliable and efficient charging solutions.
