A New Era for Bahamian Tourism
The sun shone brightly over Grand Bahama as Carnival Cruise Line unveiled its latest private destination, Celebration Key. This highly anticipated opening marked a significant milestone for the region and the cruise line, which has invested heavily in creating a unique experience for travelers.
On Saturday, the first guests arrived aboard the Carnival Vista, a ship capable of accommodating nearly 4,000 passengers. Among the attendees were key figures from Carnival Cruise Line, including President Christine Duffy, CEO Josh Weinstein, and even “chief fun officer” Shaquille O’Neal. Their presence underscored the importance of this event, which was more than 25 years in the making.
Duffy expressed her excitement during the grand opening ceremony, highlighting that nearly 5,000 guests were welcomed to the new destination. She emphasized the company’s commitment to the Bahamas, noting that over 25 local business owners are now operating on-site, and more than 1,200 Bahamians have been employed to build and operate the facility.
To show appreciation for the local community, Carnival hosted a special preview event for government officials, community leaders, and residents. The event came with a meaningful message, as many of the employees had returned to Grand Bahama after Hurricane Dorian in 2019. For them, the opportunity to work at Celebration Key represents a chance to rebuild their lives and contribute to the island’s recovery.
During the opening ceremony, Duffy, Weinstein, O’Neal, and Captain Paolo Severini turned a giant key to symbolically unlock the gates of the 10-story Suncastle. They also opened the Lokono Cove shopping area and celebrated with a Champagne toast at Pearl Cove Beach Club, an adults-only retreat offering luxury amenities.
Passengers aboard the Carnival Vista quickly made their way to Starfish Lagoon and Calypso Lagoon, each spanning 275,000 square feet. Children enjoyed the two 350-foot water slides, while adults relaxed at the Sunshine Swings Bar. The lagoons are just the beginning of what Celebration Key has to offer.
Expansion and Growth Plans
Celebration Key is set to welcome 20 Carnival ships sailing from 10 American homeports. By 2025, the destination expects to host two million guests, with projections reaching four million by 2028. The current 68-acre site will soon expand to include an additional 154 acres, with 110 acres designated as a wetlands preserve.
The existing cruise pier can accommodate two of Carnival’s largest ships simultaneously, and construction is already underway to add space for two more in the future. As guests walk down the 2,200-foot-long pier, they arrive at Paradise Plaza, a vibrant promenade featuring a sun-shaped arch, guest services, and an ice cream shop.
From here, travelers can explore one of four distinct areas within Celebration Key:
- Starfish Lagoon: A family-friendly spot with a splash pad, sports courts, and water slides.
- Calypso Lagoon: An adult-oriented area with a variety of bars and dining options.
- Lokono Cove: A shopping area offering authentic Bahamian goods, duty-free items, and local art.
- Pearl Cove Beach Club: A luxury retreat for guests aged 18 and up, featuring an infinity pool and exclusive beach access.
Unique Accommodations and Activities
Travelers can rent a range of accommodations, including Beach Supervillas and Over-the-Lagoon Supervillas that sleep up to 10 people. AquaBanas provide shaded spots for groups to relax with their feet in the water, while water daybeds offer a refreshing place to lounge for two.
For those seeking adventure beyond the resort, a variety of shore excursions are available, such as kayak quests, Jeep tours, and glass-bottom boat rides. Daily Junkanoo parades featuring costumed performers, live music, and classic beach games add to the lively atmosphere.
Celebration Key is not just a destination—it’s a celebration of the Bahamas’ culture, natural beauty, and resilience. With its blend of relaxation, entertainment, and local engagement, it promises to become a must-visit for cruise travelers for years to come.
