INEC Deploys Officials Ahead of Key Polls in Ekiti and Osun: June-August 2026

The Independent National Electoral Commission has dispatched the six newly approved Resident Electoral Commissioners who were recently confirmed by the National Assembly.

As announced by the commission, the gubernatorial elections for Ekiti and Osun states will take place on June 20, 2026, and August 8, 2026, respectively.

INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, made this announcement during the oath-taking ceremony for an additional six Resident Electoral Commissioners held at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja on Friday.

The reassigned RECs include Dr. Sa’ad Idris to Gombe State; Dr. Johnson Sinikiem to Cross River State; Feyijimi Ibiyemi to Ogun State; Mukhtar Gajiram to Taraba State; Chukwuemeka Ibeziako to Abia State; and Umar Garba to Sokoto State.

Yakubu stated that the redeployment was essential to assist the commission with its tasks leading up to the forthcoming elections.

As stated by the head of INEC, although the impacted RECs have already received administrative notifications, the complete list of their new assignments will shortly be posted on INEC’s website and shared via their social media channels.

Regarding the gubernatorial elections in Ekiti and Osun, Yakubu stated that issuing the schedule adhered to the legal obligation to announce election details at least 360 days prior to the voting day.

Yakubu stated, “The election for Ekiti State is scheduled for Saturday, June 20, 2026. Party primaries will commence on October 20, 2025, and conclude on November 10, 2025, allowing political organizations time to submit their nomination papers through the designated online platform. This system closes at 6:00 PM on December 22, 2025—precisely six months prior to the electoral event.”

The definitive roster of candidates will be released on January 18, 2026. Political parties will kick off their public campaigns on January 21, 2026, with activities concluding 24 hours prior to election day.

For Osun State, the election is scheduled for Saturday, August 8, 2026. Political party primaries will commence on November 24, 2025, and conclude on December 15, 2025. The deadline for political parties to submit their nominations via an online portal is set for 6:00 PM on February 9, 2026—this must occur no more than 180 days prior to the election date.

Yakubu stated that the definitive list of candidates will be released on March 9, 2026. Political party campaigns open to the public will start on March 11 and conclude 24 hours prior to election day.

The INEC Chairman mentioned that the comprehensive schedule for both elections has already been posted on the commission’s website and social media platforms for public viewing and to assist political parties.

He similarly tackled worries raised by citizens about the postponement of upcoming by-elections and the restart of uninterrupted voter registration across the country.

He stated that the count of outstanding byelections has increased to 17. He assured Nigerians that the preparations for both the CVR and these byelections are almost finished, promising that complete information will be shared shortly.
