Indigenous West Nile Virus Cases Found in Paris, France

Two local cases of West Nile virus were identified in Seine-Saint-Denis, within the Paris area, according to the regional health agency (ARS) of Île-France on Wednesday.

“Some initial local transmission cases of the West Nile virus have been identified in Île-de-France,” stated the ARS in a press release.

The West Nile virus is primarily spread to humans via bites from mosquitoes belonging to the “Culex” genus, which become infected after biting a bird that carries the virus, as the same source mentioned, noting that this mosquito species, found in France, tends to bite mainly at night, in contrast to the tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus, which is active during the day.

This summer, in addition to the two cases in Paris, five more indigenous cases were identified in the Alpes-Côte-d’Azur region, located in southern France.

“In 80% of cases, the infection does not show any symptoms,” stated the ARS. When symptoms do appear, they resemble those of the flu (including high fever along with headaches, muscle or stomach pain, vomiting, and diarrhea), as reported by the same source, which also mentioned that in less than 1% of cases, neurological issues (such as meningitis or encephalitis) can develop.

“Typically, the patient recovers on their own, occasionally with aftereffects, but viral infections can be life-threatening, particularly for older individuals,” the ARS stated, urging those exhibiting relevant symptoms — including a sudden fever, headaches and back pain, muscle aches, cough, swollen lymph nodes in the neck, a rash, nausea, or stomach pain — to seek medical attention promptly.
