Improper Sewage and Waste Disposal in Maiduguri

The ongoing dedication of Professor Babagana Umara Zulum to enhance Borno’s infrastructure is being counteracted by poor management, which has been subtly undermining critical areas such as water and sanitation, resulting in a precarious outlook for the local population.

Although the town conducts monthly sanitation programs, these actions remain overlooked. Maiduguri’s water system is encountering an escalating problem, as incorrect sewage links and uncontrolled waste disposal block drainage networks, worsening floods during the rainy season.

Numerous homes and businesses in Maiduguri have toilet pipes linked directly to the drainage network, leading to the release of raw sewage into the drains. This causes blockages and presents significant health dangers. Moreover, people frequently throw garbage carelessly into the drainage system, worsening flood conditions during the rainy season.

Significantly, certain residents dispose of waste into the drainage system when it rains, thinking that the water will carry it off. However, this behavior simply moves the trash, possibly leading to disease outbreaks and flooding as the debris builds up and remains unremoved.

The lack of comprehensive needs evaluation and ineffective project implementation has led to mismanagement, ultimately denying our communities access to crucial waste management services, especially in locations like Gwange, Jiddari Polo, Ajilari Cross, Kofa Biyu, and similar areas.

As per a 2016 report from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), data on waste production and its makeup in Maiduguri indicates that daily waste generation is estimated at 390 tons, increasing to 570 tons per day because of population expansion and the movement of internally displaced persons.

In this context, it is essential to enhance project planning and implementation, supply storm covers for every water drainage system, carry out comprehensive needs assessments by involving local residents, enforce rules related to waste disposal, provide sufficient resources for drainage infrastructure, inform citizens about appropriate waste management practices, and establish monitoring mechanisms to guarantee correct usage and upkeep.
