Growing Concerns Over Human Rights Violations in Kenya
International Justice Mission (IJM) has expressed deep concern over a rising number of human rights violations following the tragic deaths of at least 15 individuals during the Saba Saba protests on July 7. These demonstrations, which took place across Kenya, resulted in dozens of injuries and have sparked widespread outrage among human rights groups.
The protests highlighted the use of excessive force by police, with IJM specifically condemning the deployment of live ammunition during public gatherings. The organization stated that such actions violate constitutional protections for the right to life and peaceful assembly. Among those killed was 12-year-old Bridget Njoki, who was reportedly shot while watching television at her home in Ndumberi, Kiambu County. Her death has led to significant public condemnation and renewed demands for police accountability.
“We strongly condemn these killings and are deeply concerned about the rising death toll during protests,” IJM said in a press statement. The organization, which has been active in Kenya since 2001, emphasized its commitment to monitoring the case of Bridget Njoki and others to ensure justice for the affected families.
IJM also referenced past incidents where numerous lives were lost during public demonstrations, including in 2023 and 2024. The group criticized the National Police Service for what it described as a troubling pattern of killings, arbitrary arrests, and attacks on journalists and human rights defenders. Recent media reports have highlighted instances where police officers allegedly used live rounds against unarmed demonstrators.
In addition, IJM condemned an incident on July 6, when women attending a press briefing at the Kenya Human Rights Commission offices were reportedly assaulted and robbed. This event underscored the growing restrictions on civic space in Kenya and the infringement of rights to assemble, picket, and express opinions.
The organization called on the Independent Policing Oversight Authority and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions to investigate the alleged abuses and take appropriate action against those found responsible. IJM also urged authorities to address sexual and gender-based violence linked to crackdowns on protests, emphasizing the need to support survivors and bring offenders to justice.
Furthermore, IJM called on the government to protect protesters, journalists, and activists, ensuring that constitutional freedoms are upheld. The organization stressed the importance of rebuilding public trust through accountability and transparency.
