Idaho DOT Reveals Innovative Interchange for SH-16 and SH-44

Public Meeting Discusses Future of State Highway 16 and 44 Interchange

Residents of Boise, Idaho, gathered for a public meeting on Thursday evening to learn about the upcoming improvements to the State Highway 16 and State Highway 44 interchange. The event aimed to inform the community about the new design, which is intended to enhance safety and streamline traffic flow for drivers in the area.

The construction of the new interchange is set to begin this summer, replacing the current intersection with a more efficient layout. This design will include ramps that allow for safer and smoother highway access. For those who could not attend the in-person meeting, there will be an online opportunity to participate from July 17 to July 31.

The new interchange will feature a partial cloverleaf design, similar to the one currently under development at the intersection of US-20/26 and State Highway 16. This design includes a bridge that allows State Highway 16 to cross over State Highway 44, along with on- and off-ramps that provide direct access between the two highways. In addition, State Highway 44 will be expanded to three lanes in both directions near the interchange.

Project Manager Styles Salek emphasized the importance of the project, stating, “The new interchange at SH-16 and SH-44 will address growing traffic demands in the Treasure Valley. This interchange will also help reduce congestion along West State Street [SH-44], a heavily traveled route for commuters and travelers alike.”

Community input has played a key role in shaping the design of the interchange. The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) has worked closely with local residents to gather feedback and ensure the project meets the needs of the community.

This project is part of ITD’s long-term vision for State Highway 16. The first phase of improvements, including the widening of the highway, was completed in 2014. The funding for this latest project comes from the Idaho Transportation Expansion and Congestion Mitigation bonding program. This initiative helps accelerate project timelines to address rapid population growth and build essential infrastructure.

Key Features of the New Interchange

  • Partial Cloverleaf Design: Provides a more efficient and safer way for vehicles to move between the two highways.
  • Bridge Construction: Allows State Highway 16 to cross over State Highway 44, reducing conflicts between traffic flows.
  • On- and Off-Ramps: Enable smooth transitions between the highways, improving accessibility for drivers.
  • Widened Lanes: State Highway 44 will be expanded to three lanes in each direction around the interchange, increasing capacity and reducing delays.

Community Engagement and Project Timeline

The ITD has made community involvement a central part of the planning process. Residents have had multiple opportunities to provide feedback, ensuring that the final design reflects the needs of the local population.

Construction is expected to start this summer, with the project progressing in phases. The goal is to complete the interchange as efficiently as possible while maintaining safety for workers and the public.

The project is part of a broader effort to improve transportation infrastructure in the Treasure Valley, addressing the challenges posed by increasing traffic and urban development. By investing in modern road designs, the ITD aims to support economic growth and enhance the quality of life for residents.

With the completion of this interchange, drivers can expect improved travel times, fewer accidents, and a more reliable transportation network. As the project moves forward, the ITD will continue to engage with the community to ensure transparency and responsiveness throughout the construction process.
