Owners of Philip DeAngelo Studio, Phil and Tina Deangelo purchased the former space and reopened their own art supply store inside. It’s now called Asheville Art Supply.

They said they went on this journey of keeping the store alive after Helene so artists could keep having high-quality supplies needed for their work.

General manager Alysha Perez is one of many former Cheap Joe’s employees that stayed.
“People are excited that this is an indie- it’s an independent art store, so it is going to be more localized to our community which I am personally more excited about, because it’s something, that when it opened in 2015, I knew that was like in me to do was to like, keep the art scene here kind of thriving and alive,” Perez said. “And so yeah, everyone’s really appreciative you know, they’re thankful that something exists that if not a big box store.”

Friday was a soft opening, with BBQ from Chimney Rock Smokehouse and even Mark Pruitt from Balsam Range stopped by to play the banjo for customers.
