I Litter Pick to Better My Village

I Litter Pick to Better My Village

A Young Hero’s Mission to Clean His Village

A 12-year-old boy from Yaxley, a village near Peterborough in Cambridgeshire, has taken it upon himself to clean up his community after witnessing an alarming amount of litter during a dog walk. Ben, the young advocate for environmental cleanliness, says the sight of trash scattered across his village was deeply upsetting.

“I just got annoyed because this is a beautiful village and there was so much rubbish, it looked horrible, disgusting,” he shared. Since then, Ben has made it a weekly ritual to go out with a black bin bag and continue until it’s full. His efforts have not gone unnoticed, though they come with mixed reactions from villagers.

Some people are happy to see him working to keep the area clean, while others have been less supportive. “I had a beer can thrown at me once, which wasn’t nice. I still went and picked it up,” he said. On the other hand, one resident even bought him a portion of chips and a drink because they were pleased with his work.

Ben’s motivation is simple: he wants to make Yaxley a better place. His mother, Ann Rowell, explained that the idea for the weekly litter pick came about during a family dog walk a few months ago. “It was really bad in one area, and he was adamant he was going home and getting his equipment,” she recalled.

Despite her initial hesitation, as they needed to prepare for school the next day, Ben was determined to take action. His passion for cleaning isn’t new—Ben has been involved in community litter picks since he was five years old. He uses equipment provided by the Yaxley Parish Council, which supports his efforts.

The boy’s goal is to eventually reach a day where he doesn’t need to fill a bin bag. “I want to see more people litter picking, I want to see less people dropping litter, I want to see my village and villages over the country with cleaner environments,” he said.

Beyond his own village, Ben dreams of a world where everyone takes responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean. “That includes the entire world. I want everywhere to be cleaner because then the environment won’t go downhill.”

His story has inspired many, and he continues to serve as a role model for young people who are passionate about making a difference. While he may be just a child, his dedication to environmental care shows that even small actions can lead to significant change.

Community Efforts and Environmental Awareness

Ben’s initiative highlights the importance of individual responsibility in maintaining clean and healthy communities. His work serves as a reminder that every person can contribute to a better environment, no matter how small their actions may seem.

In addition to Ben’s solo efforts, there are other groups and individuals across the country who are also working to combat littering. Some have formed volunteer organizations dedicated to regular clean-up events, while others have taken personal steps to address the issue.

For those interested in joining similar efforts, there are often local initiatives that welcome new participants. Whether through organized community clean-ups or personal commitments like Ben’s, everyone has the power to make a positive impact.

By raising awareness and encouraging others to take part, these efforts can create lasting change. As Ben continues his mission, he hopes to inspire more people to take responsibility for their surroundings and work together to preserve the planet for future generations.
