I-Cycle Camp Empowers Kids with Disabilities to Ride Again

EAST PEORIA, Illinois (WMBD) — The wheels spun continuously as the children participated in the yearly I-Can-Bike program, striving to develop the skill of riding a bicycle.

“Each summer, we conduct a five-day camp that teaches people with disabilities how to ride a standard two-wheel bicycle without training wheels, handlebars, or any form of assistance,” said Brittany Personett, executive assistant at Easterseals Central Illinois.

This is the 14th year for theI-Can-Bike camp, hosted by ICan Shine, and each year proves to be a significant achievement, with approximately 80 percent of attendees able to ride a two-wheeled bicycle independently by the conclusion of the camp.

“For those who don’t fully grasp it, many come back for camp the following year. That’s what ultimately convinces them,” said Personett.

Many parents whose children are part of the program find it difficult to express the emotion of watching their kids ride a bike for the first time, particularly after struggling to assist them themselves.

“It’s difficult to describe. It’s truly remarkable. Everyone involved with the children is very patient. They are kind and gentle, and it has been very uplifting. Just witnessing it unfold is incredible,” said Michael David-Kluger, the parent of Colin, a participant in the I-Can-Bike program.

Colin is beginning to ride independently due to the camp, which is leading to an upcoming visit to the bike shop.

“To gain the assurance of being capable of doing it on his own, it’s truly wonderful. We can’t wait to go bike shopping in a few days,” said David-Kluger.

Individuals who contribute to making this camp possible are volunteers from various locations, such as high school athletes, students from Bradley University, and alumni from Illinois Central College.

“Our volunteers are truly the heart and soul of the program. We couldn’t accomplish this without them. We aim to keep a 2 to 1 volunteer to rider ratio, ensuring that at least two volunteers are working with each participant at all times,” said Personett.
