Houthis Claim Responsibility for Attacking a Ship in the Red Sea

Yemen’s Houthi rebels have claimed responsibility for the sinking of the Greek-operated vessel Eternity C in the Red Sea. This marks their second attack on a ship this week after a period of relative calm. The Houthi military spokesman, Yahya Saree, stated that the vessel was heading toward Eilat in Israel and that they had taken measures to rescue the crew, provide medical care, and transport them to a safe location. Four crew members were killed, six were rescued, and 15 remain missing.

The attack on the Eternity C is considered the most serious assault by the Houthis in the vital maritime trade route that once carried $1 trillion in cargo annually. The rebels previously claimed an attack on another ship, the Magic Seas, earlier in the week. Despite a ceasefire agreement with Washington in May, the Houthis have vowed to continue targeting ships they claim are linked to Israel.

Rescue Operations Underway After Ship Attack

Seven individuals were rescued from the Red Sea after their cargo ship came under attack by suspected Houthi militants. The Eternity C, which was Greek-owned, was attacked on Monday, with the assault continuing into Tuesday before the vessel sank on Wednesday morning. Four of the 25 crew members were killed, and the remaining 21 were forced to abandon the damaged ship. The seven rescued crew members spent over 24 hours in the water before being taken to safety. Yemen’s exiled government, the EU, and the US State Department have all blamed the Houthis for the attack.

Israeli Airstrikes Result in Multiple Casualties in Gaza

Gaza’s civil defense agency reported that two overnight Israeli airstrikes killed 20 people, including six children. The first strike targeted a tent in Khan Younis, while the second hit a camp in the north. The Israeli military is investigating the reports, but the casualties highlight the ongoing violence in the region.

Legal Expert Warns of Potential War Crimes in Gaza

A legal expert has warned that Israel’s plan to relocate Palestinians to a “humanitarian zone” near the Egyptian border could constitute a war crime or crime against humanity. The plan, announced by Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz, involves housing 600,000 displaced Palestinians in the ruins of Rafah city. Mark Klamberg, a professor of international law at Stockholm University, compared the proposal to past war crimes cases and urged the US to be cautious about its involvement.

Macron Calls for Recognition of Palestinian Statehood

French President Emmanuel Macron has urged the UK parliament to recognize Palestinian statehood as a step toward peace. During his state visit to Britain, Macron emphasized the importance of a ceasefire in Gaza without conditions. He also highlighted the need for European unity in addressing the conflict. While UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy has not yet decided when to recognize Palestinian statehood, France hopes to do so jointly with the UK.

UN Highlights Critical Fuel Shortages in Gaza

The United Nations has warned that fuel shortages in Gaza have reached a critical level, with “virtually no additional accessible stocks left.” The humanitarian office, OCHA, stressed the urgent need for fuel to power essential services such as hospitals, water desalination plants, and telecommunications. Without immediate action, the situation in Gaza could worsen significantly.

Discussions on Hostage Releases and Regional Security

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with US President Donald Trump for the second time in two days to discuss efforts to secure the release of hostages in Gaza. Netanyahu also mentioned the “great victory” achieved over Iran. Trump has expressed optimism about a potential ceasefire, with US envoy to the Middle East stating that Israel and Hamas are close to an agreement. Qatar is facilitating indirect talks between the two sides.

In addition, Netanyahu announced his nomination of Trump for a Nobel Peace Prize, highlighting the significance of their discussions on regional security and hostage releases.
