Hong Kong Star Alfred Cheung Calls Ipoh’s Chicken Hor Fun the Best Cantonese Dish He’s Tasted in Decades

Actor Alfred Cheung praised the famous chicken hor fun dish in Ipoh, Malaysia, calling it “the best Cantonese dish” he has had in decades.

, Cheung traveled to Ipoh for medical treatment and could not resist indulging in the local cuisine despite his health concerns. The city’s renowned chicken hor fun was the standout for him, prompting him to share his thoughts on Facebook: “I used to think the best hor fun was from Guangzhou, but after trying the one in Ipoh, everything else [doesn’t compare].”

“Not only do they preserve traditional Cantonese culture but also blend it with Malay culinary traditions to create unique flavors,” he added. “Remember: Ipoh hor fun is worth flying for.”

During his trip, Cheung also sampled other local dishes such as kaya toast, bean sprouts chicken rice, and Ipoh white coffee, which he described as “a richer Hong Kong-style afternoon tea.”

On a previous holiday to Kuala Lumpur with his niece and friends in May, Cheung
shared his affection for Malaysia
, calling it a potential second home. He praised the country’s cleanliness and the warmth and humility of its people, which left a lasting impression on him.

At 70, Cheung has made his mark not only as an actor but also as a scriptwriter and director. After earning a diploma in film production from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, he furthered his studies in the Art of Movies at The New School in New York.

His 1983 film “Let’s Make Laugh,” which he both wrote and directed, won him the Best Screenplay award, while leading actress Cecilia Yip received the Best Actress award at the 3rd Hong Kong Film Awards.
