A Washington County judge on Friday sentenced a Hillsboro man to 2 years in prison for forcing a 26-year-old man with developmental disabilities
into involuntary servitude.
Judge Brandon Thompson handed down the sentence to Jack Patrick Hauser, 47, after Hauser pleaded guilty to human trafficking and failing to register as a sex offender, court records show.
The Hillsboro Police Department arrested Hauser on Aug. 27, 2024, after community members reported that Hauser had made the man sell snacks outside of the Hillsboro Esplanade shopping center since 2023, police said.
A press release from the District Attorney’s Office said that Hauser sometimes forced the man to sell snacks in front of the shopping center for days at a time without shelter or appropriate clothing, and Hauser kept most of the proceeds.
When he wasn’t working, Hauser forced the man to sleep in a shed or in a car, where he didn’t have access to electricity or running water, police said.
Police said that Hauser — who isn’t related to the victim — took control of the man’s life after his mother died, and court records show that he went as far as to destroy his government issued ID and withhold basic necessities in order to coerce him.
Hauser was also convicted of third-degree statutory rape in 2003, and failed to report himself as a sex offender when he moved to Hillsboro, officials said.
