Here at KHOU 11 we are all about helping people find solutions. That’s why we are happy to share this next story with you, our viewers.
A Houston-area student, Kiya Harvey,
did not get to go to her senior prom
because the designer hired to make her dress didn’t finish it.
KHOU 11’s Amanda Henderson
first shared her story with us in May
. Now, she shares how a different designer saw Harvey’s story and stepped up to help.
Stitch by stitch each gown at
Danny Nguyen’s studio
is being attended to by hand.
“I’ve been in the industry for 18 years now,” Nguyen said.
The Houston designer said he puts thought into every sketch and style to ensure the final product is exactly what the person who receives it, wants.
“To make [his client(s)] happy, secure and confident,” Nguyen said.
Harvey was filled with anticipation at Nguyen’s studio.
“I’m excited because like looking at his work I’m like, OK, he could do what I’m asking for,” Harvey said.
Nguyen is working with Harvey and her mother, Kewana Jones Harvey.
We first spoke with the ladies in May days after they had ordered and paid for a prom dress from a different local designer but never received it.
Jones Harvey even rushed to the studio when it wasn’t delivered on time. She found the dress not finished. As a result Harvey missed her senior prom.
This is a story Nguyen’s wife came across on
KHOU 11’s website
hours after airing.
“When your wife showed you the story you said OK we’re going to figure this out you guys reached out to us and you said we think we have a solution here,” Henderson said.
“We know prom is over but does not mean that she cannot have a dress,” Nguyen said.
So we all spent the day at Nguyen’s shop last week to see the new design come to life. The mother and daughter sat across Nguyen as he sketched a new dress design using pens and markers.
“To be honest, I like everything,” Harvey said. “I want to thank him like so, so much because he really didn’t have to reach out like it wasn’t his puzzle to piece back together… but he did.”
The dress should be finished within the next two weeks according to Nguyen. Harvey and her family plan to recreate the photos they didn’t take at her prom sendoff party.
