Weather Patterns in Morocco: A Week of Contrasts
Morocco is set to experience a week marked by contrasting weather conditions, with stable and mild temperatures along the coasts due to the influence of the Azores High. In contrast, inland and southern regions will continue to face intense heat under the impact of a Saharan thermal low, according to the national meteorological service.
Houcine Youaabed, spokesperson for the General Directorate of Meteorology, highlighted that temperatures in the southeastern and southern parts of the country are expected to range between 37°C and 43°C (98.6°F to 109.4°F) from Monday through Wednesday. This significant heat is expected to persist as the Saharan thermal low continues to exert its influence over the region.
Meanwhile, coastal areas along the Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea will see low cloud cover and morning fog patches, which are expected to keep the weather moderate. According to Youaabed, this weather pattern will remain consistent throughout the week, with a potential rise in temperatures early next week as the Saharan heat moves further westward.
Regional Weather Variability
Localized thunderstorms are anticipated during the afternoons in the High and Middle Atlas, the Rif, and parts of eastern Morocco. These storms will be accompanied by moderate to strong winds, which could lead to dust storms in the southeast and southern provinces. The variation in weather conditions across different regions is attributed to several factors.
The meteorologist explained that the temperature differences between nearby areas are largely due to cold marine currents that cool the coastal regions, while inland areas do not benefit from this moderating effect. “The further inland you go, the more you feel the full force of the Saharan low, which brings hot, dry air,” he said. Additionally, the mountainous terrain plays a role in the formation of cumulonimbus clouds and localized thunderstorms, contributing to the variability in weather even between neighboring areas.
Marine Weather Outlook
An updated marine vigilance map indicates strong winds off the southern coastal areas between Cape Boujdour and Danford Point on Tuesday, July 8. A yellow alert level has been issued, signaling localized, moderate risks. On Monday, most coastal areas, both Mediterranean and Atlantic, will remain calm, except for gusty winds south of Cape Boujdour.
Sea conditions are expected to vary across different regions:
- Mediterranean: Calm
- Strait of Gibraltar: Calm to slight
- North of Mehdia: Slight to moderate
- Atlantic Coast: Moderate to rough to very rough along the rest of the coast
These conditions highlight the ongoing challenges posed by the current weather patterns, particularly in the southern and inland parts of the country. As the week progresses, continued monitoring of weather updates will be essential for residents and visitors alike.
