Health Expo Nairobi: Addressing Healthcare Staff Shortage Amidst Stakeholders

Kenya’s Healthcare Sector Faces a Critical Staff Shortage

Kenya’s healthcare sector is grappling with a severe staff shortage that could escalate to over 114,000 workers by 2030. This challenge poses a significant obstacle to the government’s efforts to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC), which aims to ensure every Kenyan has access to essential healthcare services.

Currently, the country produces only 7,650 new health workers annually, far below the required number of 70,000 to meet the rising demand for healthcare. With an annual increase in healthcare needs of 4.7%, the gap between supply and demand continues to widen. This situation is further compounded by a massive budget cut of KSh 38.7 billion, which threatens to hinder progress toward UHC.

A Platform for Collaboration and Innovation

To address these challenges, over 8,000 participants from the government, private sector, and international community will gather in Nairobi for a major healthcare event. The conference, held at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC) from October 6 to October 2025, brings together more than 300 exhibitors, representatives from 20 countries, and over 65 international speakers.

This event, known as the World Health Expo (WHX) Nairobi and WHX Labs Nairobi, marks a rebranding of previous conferences such as Medic East Africa and Medlab East Africa. These events have been pivotal in showcasing healthcare innovations, attracting investment, and fostering collaboration between businesses, governments, and innovators.

Strategic Partnerships and Regional Impact

The WHX Nairobi event is hosted in partnership with the Ministry of Health (MoH) and supported by key organizations such as the Africa CDC, Kenya Healthcare Foundation, and the Kenya Medical Association. The collaboration aims to break geographical barriers and position Kenya as a regional medical hub.

The event provides a platform for hospital executives, laboratory managers, procurement specialists, and government officials to drive positive change. According to Desta Lakew, Group Director of Partnerships & External Affairs at AMREF Health Africa, the conference will focus on expanding medical education, improving laboratory science training, and creating incentives for rural practice.

Lakew emphasized that Kenya’s journey toward UHC is grounded in the principle of Primary Health Care. The five transformative health laws passed in 2023 have laid a robust foundation, ensuring equitable access to services, sustainable financing, interoperable digital systems, and a people-centred, data-driven health system. He hopes the WHX Nairobi roundtable will catalyse greater political goodwill and innovation toward scalable, people-first solutions that can be replicated across Africa.

Industry Insights and Opportunities

Tom Coleman, Portfolio Director for Informa Markets, highlighted that WHX Labs Nairobi will build on the legacy of the past seven years to address key health matters concerning Kenya and the greater region. The event features a packed agenda of six CPD-accredited conferences, expert-led discussions, and live product demonstrations.

New country pavilions from Egypt, South Africa, and Brazil will showcase the latest healthcare products and technologies. Attendees can gain practical knowledge and connect with industry leaders and experts from Kenya’s healthcare and laboratory industries.

Conclusion: A Step Toward Sustainable Solutions

The WHX Nairobi event represents a critical step in addressing Kenya’s healthcare workforce challenges. By bringing together diverse stakeholders, the conference aims to foster collaboration, drive innovation, and promote sustainable solutions. As the country works towards achieving UHC, the insights and partnerships formed at this event will play a vital role in shaping the future of healthcare in Kenya and beyond.
