A Journey of Dedication and Passion
Kevin Williams, the headteacher of Ysgol Bryn Tabor in Coedpoeth, is retiring after nearly two decades of service at the school. His official last day will be August 31, marking the end of a significant chapter in his life. As he prepares to step away from the education sector, he reflects on a career filled with challenges, achievements, and meaningful relationships.
Early Dreams and Career Path
Born in Rhos, Kevin initially aspired to become an actor. He studied at the Welsh College of Music and Drama, where he pursued his passion for the performing arts. This brief acting career included notable roles, such as playing a teacher on S4C’s Pobl y Cwm and participating in Theatre in Education at Theatr Clwyd in Mold. However, his path eventually led him towards teaching.
After completing a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in 1992, Mr Williams began his teaching journey at Bedwas Junior School in South Wales, where he spent five years. He then moved back to North Wales, taking up a position at Ysgol Y Llys in Prestatyn for three years. His dedication and commitment soon earned him a promotion, and he became headteacher at Ysgol Bodhyfryd in Wrexham.
In 2007, he took on the role of headteacher at Ysgol Bryn Tabor, where he has remained ever since, shaping the lives of countless students and staff.
Reflections on a Rewarding Career
Speaking about his time in education, Mr Williams highlights the variety and unpredictability of each day. “Each day is different and it’s hard to predict what will happen next. No day is boring,” he said. He also expressed gratitude for the supportive colleagues he has worked with throughout his career.
“I’m lucky to work with some great staff, and I’ve found this at every school I’ve worked at. It’s so good to have supportive colleagues around me,” he added. He particularly enjoys seeing the pupils each day and witnessing their enjoyment and curiosity about their learning.
Mr Williams also mentioned that some of his former pupils are now returning as parents, which brings a sense of fulfillment. “I’ll certainly miss the staff and pupils when I retire,” he said.
Lessons Learned and Highlights
Throughout his career, Mr Williams has learned valuable lessons. One of the most important is to remain positive and avoid rushing decisions. “If possible, speak to other people and seek advice before making up your mind,” he advised. This approach has guided him through many challenges and helped him make informed choices.
His career has been marked by numerous highlights. From the success of the hip hop and disco dancing team at the National Urdd Eisteddfod in 2011 to the athletics team winning the Flintshire and Wrexham Urdd inter county competition, these moments stand out as proud achievements.
Mr Williams also enjoys the competitive spirit of the annual end-of-year rounders match between staff and Year 6 students. With a 17-year winning streak, he hopes to go out on a high.
Gratitude and Farewell
Most importantly, it is the staff and pupils who have made his job enjoyable. Mr Williams will be greatly missed by all he has worked with over the past 18 years. “I’d like to thank all of the staff and students that I’ve had the pleasure of working with. I’m fortunate to have so many happy memories to look back on,” he said.
As he embarks on a new chapter, we wish Kevin a very happy retirement. His legacy will continue to inspire those who have had the privilege of knowing him.
