A Remarkable Journey in Irish Sports
Hannah Tyrrell has long been recognized as one of the most talented women in Irish sports, excelling in rugby, soccer, and Gaelic football. Her versatility and dedication have made her a standout figure in the sporting world. While 2024 was initially planned to be her final season on the pitch, Hannah found herself still driven by the desire to compete.
After becoming a mother for the first time in 2023, with her wife Sorcha, Hannah expressed deep gratitude for their support in her decision to return to the sport for one more season. This choice marked a significant moment in her career, highlighting her commitment to both her family and her passion for the game.
A Strong Performance in the Semi-Final
On Saturday, Dublin faced Galway in the TG4 All-Ireland SFC semi-final, where they emerged victorious with a score of 3-14 to 2-14 in extra time. The match was a testament to the team’s resilience, and Hannah played a crucial role in their success. Dublin’s joint manager, Paul Casey, praised her performance, acknowledging the impact she had on the team’s victory.
In an interview, Hannah reflected on her journey, stating that a year ago she felt she had reached the end of her career. “I was done. I was out the gap. Gone. I’d given so much to sport and different teams,” she recalled. However, her perspective soon shifted, and she decided to return to the Dublin football team for one more season. She emphasized the sacrifices made by her wife and family, saying, “It was time to go off and do other things.”
Looking Ahead with Gratitude
At 35 years old, Hannah is looking forward to enjoying more free time with her family, friends, and exploring new opportunities. “I’m looking forward to having that bit of free time to go out with my family, to go out with my friends, to go off on holidays and away for weekends…I’m fairly at peace with it because I’ve known. I’ve been very lucky to play high level for a very long time.”
She also acknowledged the ups and downs of her five-year tenure with Dublin, expressing hope to finish on a high note. “It would be nice to finish on a high, but nothing is guaranteed.” Her perspective reflects a deep appreciation for the time she has spent in the sport and the experiences it has brought.
A Love Story That Began on the Pitch
Hannah met Sorcha when she joined the Dublin team in 2013. Their relationship developed slowly, with Hannah noting, “It was kind of different from the start for me, and after a couple of years, we both realized that we had feelings for each other. We started dating and we’ve been together ever since.”
In 2023, the couple welcomed their first child, Aoife, and shortly after, the Dubs won the All-Ireland. Hannah famously brought baby Aoife onto the pitch to celebrate, capturing the attention of the nation. The image of the new mother showing her daughter what they had won became a memorable moment, symbolizing the balance between her personal and professional life.
A New Chapter Begins
As Hannah prepares for the next chapter of her life, spending quality time with her family will be a top priority. Her journey highlights not only her athletic achievements but also the strength and love that have supported her throughout her career.
