Hamas Offers Immediate Gaza Ceasefire Talks

Hamas Expresses Readiness for Immediate Ceasefire Talks in Gaza

Hamas has declared its readiness to engage in immediate discussions regarding a proposed ceasefire in Gaza, following an ongoing Israeli military offensive that has resulted in the deaths of over 50 individuals, as reported by the civil defense agency. This announcement comes after consultations with other Palestinian factions and just before Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s planned visit to Washington, where President Donald Trump is advocating for an end to the conflict, which has now persisted for 21 months.

The militant group stated that it is prepared to initiate serious negotiations on the terms of a draft US-backed truce proposal received from mediators. “The movement is ready to engage immediately and seriously in a cycle of negotiations on the mechanism to put in place” the terms of the proposal, according to a statement from Hamas.

Islamic Jihad, an ally of Hamas, also expressed support for ceasefire talks but emphasized the need for guarantees that Israel will not resume its aggression once hostages held in Gaza are released. The conflict in Gaza began with Hamas’s unprecedented attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, which triggered a massive Israeli offensive aimed at dismantling Hamas and rescuing all hostages taken by militants.

Two previous ceasefires, facilitated by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States, have temporarily halted fighting and led to the return of some Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. On Friday, Netanyahu reaffirmed his commitment to bringing home all the hostages held in Gaza, under pressure from domestic concerns about their safety.

Trump expressed his desire for “safety for the people of Gaza,” stating, “They’ve gone through hell.”

The 60-Day Truce Proposal

A Palestinian source familiar with the negotiations revealed that the latest proposals include a 60-day truce, during which Hamas would release half of the living Israeli captives in the Gaza Strip—estimated to be around 22 individuals—in exchange for Israel releasing a number of Palestinian prisoners and detainees.

Out of 251 hostages seized by Palestinian militants during the October 2023 attack, 49 remain in Gaza, including 27 who the Israeli military claims are deceased. Nearly 21 months of war have created dire humanitarian conditions for more than two million people in the Gaza Strip, with Israel recently expanding its military operations.

The Israeli military stated it has been targeting suspected Hamas locations across the territory, including areas around Gaza City in the north and Khan Yunis and Rafah in the south.

Civil Defense Reports Increased Casualties

Gaza civil defense official Mohammad al-Mughayyir reported that Israeli strikes and gunfire killed at least 52 people on Friday. The Israeli military is investigating these reports, except for a few incidents where it requested coordinates and timeframes. Due to media restrictions in Gaza and challenges in accessing many areas, AFP cannot independently verify the tolls and details provided by the civil defense agency.

In a separate statement, the Israeli military confirmed that a 19-year-old sergeant fell during combat in the southern Gaza Strip. Mughayyir noted that among the Palestinians killed were five individuals shot while waiting for aid near a US-run site near Rafah and several others waiting for aid near the Wadi Gaza Bridge.

These deaths add to a growing number of casualties near aid distribution centers in the devastated territory, where UN agencies warn that famine is imminent. At Nasser hospital in Khan Yunis, crowds mourned 16 people killed on Thursday by what the civil defense agency described as shooting close to a nearby aid center.

“I lost my brother in the American distribution centre that they set up to feed people,” said one mourner, Narmin Abu Muammar. “They are killing people, not feeding them.”

Medical aid charity Doctors Without Borders (MSF) confirmed that Abdullah Hammad, who recently completed a contract with the organization, was among those killed in Thursday’s shooting. MSF stated he was the 12th colleague lost in the Gaza war.

“We demand an end to this bloodshed,” MSF said in a statement. The US- and Israeli-run Gaza Humanitarian Foundation has distanced itself from reports of deadly incidents near its sites.

Displaced Civilians Face Further Tragedy

Mughayyir informed AFP that eight people, including a child, were killed in an Israeli air strike on the tents of displaced civilians near Khan Yunis. The civil defense official reported eight more people killed in two other strikes on camps along the coast, including two children who died early Friday.

The Israeli military stated it is operating throughout Gaza to dismantle Hamas military capabilities. The Hamas attack of October 2023 resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli official figures. Israel’s retaliatory military campaign has killed at least 57,268 people in Gaza, also mostly civilians, according to the Hamas-run territory’s health ministry. The United Nations considers the figures reliable.
