Greenwich Schools Welcomes Two New Special Education Coordinators from Across Connecticut

New Leadership in Special Education

Greenwich Public Schools has welcomed two new special education coordinators, Deborah Perry and Jennifer Stewart. Their appointment marks a significant step forward for the district as they take on critical roles in supporting students with disabilities. The transition comes after Theresa Fox and Leah Zilich left their positions to pursue new opportunities in other districts.

Perry and Stewart are now responsible for planning, coordinating, and supervising special education services. They also assist building administrators in monitoring classroom instruction for students with disabilities. Their arrival is seen as a positive development for the district’s educational landscape.

Dr. Stacey Heiligenthaler, chief officer of special education and student supports, expressed confidence in Perry and Stewart’s abilities. She highlighted their extensive knowledge, experience, and expertise, which will be valuable assets to the schools and families in Greenwich.

Deborah Perry: A Career Focused on Special Education

Deborah Perry has been deeply involved in education since 2006. She began her career as a special education teacher for Greenwich Public Schools. Her journey continued with roles at Norwalk Public Schools, where she served as director of scientific research-based interventions and 504s since 2021.

Before that, Perry was the department head of special education at Stamford High School for five years. She also held the position of education director at Devereaux Glenholme School in Washington for two years. Additionally, she has taught at Devereaux Glenholme and Ridgefield High School.

Perry holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in special education from the University of Connecticut. She also earned a doctoral degree from the University of New England. Her commitment to education and students is evident in her work and philosophy.

“I see students reaching their goals as a source of joy,” Perry said. “I hope to help families and students build more collaborative relationships with the schools, and listen and support what is best for our students.”

Jennifer Stewart: A Dedication to Student Support

Jennifer Stewart brings a wealth of experience to her new role. She previously worked in Milford Public Schools as the director of pupil services since 2023. Before that, she was a special education coordinator and then director of student services in North Haven Public Schools.

Stewart started her career as a special education teacher in Stratford, Westport, and Trumbull. She later took on roles at Regional School District 16 in Prospect and Trumbull Public Schools.

Her approach to education emphasizes strong engagement with students, staff, families, and administrators. Stewart believes this collaboration enhances instructional practices and ensures students have meaningful opportunities with the curriculum.

“Students are at the center of my work as I strive to help each one reach their full potential and discover new ways to be an active and contributing member of the Greenwich community,” Stewart said.

Both Perry and Stewart bring a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities in special education. Their backgrounds and experiences make them well-suited to support the needs of students and families in Greenwich. With their leadership, the district is poised to continue its commitment to providing high-quality education for all students.
