A picture depicting five senior ladies laughing together as they share spring rolls in a tranquil part of Sichuan has been declared the globe’s top food photo.
Titled straightforwardly as ‘The Elderly Enjoying Tasty Meals,’ the touching photograph captured by Chinese photographer Xiaoling Li has claimed first place in this year’s World Food Photography Awards, outshining approximately 10,000 submissions from over 70 nations.
Captured in Shuangliu Ancient Town, this photograph depicts a “Dragon Gateway” scene—a term used in China when neighbors come together to converse, exchange rumors, and recount tales while enjoying meals. As described by Li, “they savor the renowned Sichuan delicacy known as spring rolls.” For them, cuisine brings joy; thus, they embrace a delightful and blissful existence.
The accolades, backed by Tenderstm Bimi®, were unveiled during an extravagant event held at London’s Mall Galleries, with celebrated chef and writer Yotam Ottolenghi as the host. This contest covers 25 different classifications—ranging from “Harvest Returns” to “Feast Under the Sky”—and honors the myriad ways in which food intertwines with our existence, traditions, and narratives.
These Awards highlight the ability of photography to share amazing food narratives from across the globe,” stated Dave Samuels, Brand Director at Tenderstem® Bimi®. “Regardless of how the world evolves, food continues to be central to our existence.
A collection of the award-winning photographs will be exhibited at Fortnum & Mason starting from 2 June.
