Grand Junction’s New Alternative Education Hub: A Fresh Learning Frontier

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -A new alternative education center called Apogee West Slope is opening in Grand Junction on September 1. Kids age 5-12 will be able to enroll.

Shelton Holmes, the Founder and Owner of Apogee West Slope, called it a sort of homeschool co-op. Holmes said they plan to support parents as the primary educator.

According to Holmes, the school will have a few differences to the average public school. He said learning will be in six-week blocks. They won’t have things like homework, and Holmes said learning will be more project-based.

“People want something different, a lot of times than regular school. Regular school is good for a lot of kids and works for a lot of kids, but there’s always a subset of kids that need something different. And so, we’re hoping to be able to bring that to the community,” said Holmes.

Holmes said they will put more emphasis on self-reliance, and they want to foster things like leadership and independence.

“Setting a good example in the early years, I think, is just critically important and I’m hoping that this is a helpful education center for my family and for the community,” said Holmes.

Holmes said he wants to create an environment that will prepare kids for the future. “The goal of this Education Center is to raise strong and resilient critical thinking leaders for the future. You know, kids that are able to operate on their own and become strong adults,” said Holmes.
