Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has described a viral video involving his family and the death of his wife as a politically motivated distraction.
In the trending Facebook video, a woman identified as Jane, who claims to be the governor’s daughter, is seen in a video call instructing her young daughter to tell her grandfather, Governor Eno, that she will not allow herself to be sacrificed as her mother allegedly was.
Reacting to the video in Uyo, Governor Eno said the footage was recorded shortly after his wife’s death last year and does not reflect the true state of his family, which he emphasised remains united.
The governor questioned the timing of the video’s resurfacing, noting that it coincides with the celebration of his midterm achievements in office. He maintained that the video would not distract him from his responsibilities to the people of Akwa Ibom State.
Eno said, ‘We are in political times, so you expect things like this to emerge. But my family is intact, you can see everyone.
‘The incident in question happened right after my wife passed away last year, so why is it resurfacing now? Why on the eve of our second anniversary, when we are celebrating significant milestones?’
He added that the video was a reminder that political detractors were at work and reiterated his call to keep families out of political battles.
‘That’s Jane herself, my daughter, you see there. We have a good family. Children can be traumatised when they lose a parent, and that pressure can manifest in different ways. I appeal to the public: please, do not resurrect painful memories.
‘It is painful enough that I lost my wife. I pray that her soul rests in peace, and I hope people will respect that. But I will not be distracted. I remain focused on my duties,’ he said.
The governor emphasised that families should be off-limits in political discourse.
