“Good Trouble” Protest in Newtown-Middletown to Challenge Trump and Honor Civil Rights Legacy

Protests Across Philadelphia Region Honor John Lewis and Oppose Trump Administration Policies

Protests against the policies of the Trump administration, which critics argue violate civil and human rights, are taking place across the Philadelphia region on Thursday. These demonstrations include one in Bucks County, as part of a nationwide effort to honor the legacy of Congressman John Lewis, a revered figure in the civil rights movement.

The protests coincide with the anniversary of Lewis’s passing on July 17, 2020. His life and work have long been a source of inspiration for activists and advocates of social justice. A rally and candlelight observance will be held in front of U.S. Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick’s office in Middletown, Pennsylvania, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The event is designed to encourage representation that reflects the values of dignity and equality that Lewis championed throughout his life.

Karen Rodriguez, co-leader of the hosting organization Indivisible Bucks County, emphasized the importance of Lewis’s legacy in today’s political climate. “John Lewis promoted the dignity and equality of all people,” she said. “What we are seeing right now from the Trump Administration is the opposite of that principle—rampant racial profiling, dehumanization, and denial of due process. There could not be a clearer contrast between the reality of where we are right now and the shining example of what we could reach for if only we live up to the example provided by John Lewis.”

Laura Rose, another co-leader of Indivisible Bucks County, added that Lewis was a powerful symbol of nonviolent protest and perseverance. “He was a man whose life was a sterling example of the principles of non-violent protest, the expansion of rights to all, and the power of perseverance,” she said. “In this era of political chaos and the Trump Administration’s attempt to strip civil rights from our fellow citizens, we all look to examples like John Lewis for a reminder of how to move forward in our search for America’s more perfect union.”

The nationwide actions are being organized by a coalition of 140 organizations, including Indivisible, under the banner of the Good Trouble Lives On movement. This initiative seeks to continue the fight for justice and equality inspired by Lewis’s life and work.

A core principle of all Good Trouble Lives On events is a commitment to nonviolent action. Organizers urge participants to de-escalate any potential confrontations with those who disagree with their values and to act lawfully at these events. They also emphasize that no weapons, even those legally permitted, should be brought to the gatherings.

The event in Middletown will take place in the parking lot of One Summit Square, located at the corner of Routes 332 and 413. Attendees are encouraged to come together in a spirit of unity and peaceful resistance, reflecting the enduring impact of John Lewis’s legacy on the ongoing struggle for civil rights and social justice.
