Empowering Young Girls Through STEM Education
Fox Valley Technical College is making a significant impact this summer by welcoming 52 young girls to its campus for the GirlTech program. This highly anticipated summer camp is designed to inspire and encourage girls to explore careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The event, which runs from July 21 to 23, provides an immersive experience for girls aged 9 to 13, offering them hands-on activities led by women who are already established in their respective STEM fields.
The three-day camp features a wide range of engaging sessions that introduce participants to various aspects of STEM. From welding and soldering to diesel engine work, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence, the curriculum is carefully crafted to spark curiosity and creativity. These activities not only expose girls to different career paths but also help build essential technical skills that can be valuable throughout their academic and professional lives.
Several local companies are supporting the initiative by leading specific sessions at the camp. Notable partners include Plexus, Miller Electric, and Kimberly-Clark, all of which contribute their expertise to ensure that the camp remains both educational and inspiring. These collaborations provide real-world insights and help bridge the gap between classroom learning and industry applications.
In addition to the expert-led sessions, the camp also benefits from the involvement of past participants. Each year, three alumni return to the program as mentors and instructors, sharing their experiences and guiding the current group of campers. Despite progress made by women in STEM fields, they remain underrepresented. According to the World Economic Forum, women accounted for 28.2% of the global STEM workforce in 2024, compared to 47.3% in non-STEM fields.
