Ghana School of Law Undergoes Leadership Transition as Yaw Oppong Exits Director Role

The head of the Ghana School of Law and head of Legal Education, Justice Nana Barima Yaw Kodie Oppong, has stated that he will resign from his position, starting Sunday, August 31, 2025.

In a message to students on Tuesday, August 12, Justice Oppong thanked God “for His love, direction, and safeguarding during the last three years.”

He mentioned that, despite his desire to finish his entire term, or at least witness the current academic year and the upcoming Call to the Bar event, “regrettably that did not happen.”

He extended his best wishes to students in Part II, stating his “sincere hope” that everyone would be called to the Bar in October, while motivating those in Part I to keep working hard and move forward in their training.

Justice Oppong called on students to show “even more respect, collaboration, and assistance” to his replacement, as well as to the administration and employees of the organization.

“May God bestow abundant blessings upon you all and grant us triumph in every undertaking. Thank you,” he concluded.

A private legal professional was named Director of Legal Education at the General Legal Council (GLC) in March 2022.

The head of Legal Education also serves as the Director of the Ghana School of Law (GSL).

At the time of his appointment, he was a senior lecturer at the institution and succeeded Kwasi Prempeh-Eck, who is about to retire.

Before becoming the leader of the nation’s top law school, Mr Prempeh-Eck served as a senior lecturer at GSL since 1999, and also worked as a senior associate at JLD & MB Legal Consultancy from 1999 to 2007.

Mr. Oppong commenced his responsibilities as the 2022/23 academic term started.

His selection followed the Legal Professions Act, 1960, which requires the GLC to name a director for GSL.

Mr. Oppong is the Manwerehene of Akyem Abuakwa, holding the title Omansomfo Barima Oppong Kodie.

The legal representative of the Supreme Court of Ghana also serves as the Managing Partner at Ampofo, Oppong and Associates, a law firm based in Accra.

Mr. Oppong has delivered lectures at various universities across the nation, among them Central University.

He was among the individuals who took office as part of the Board of Directors for the Graphic Communication Group.

He possesses significant experience and knowledge in Energy and Natural Resource Law. Additionally, he has considerable experience in Banking and Finance law and practice, having served as a legal professional with various banking and financial institutions in Ghana.

He is a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators based in London. He currently serves as the Managing Partner at Ampofo, Oppong, and Associates, a legal practice located in Accra, Ghana. He has delivered lectures at various universities across Ghana, including Central University.

He has recently been appointed as Mawerehene of Akyem Abuakwa, one of the subordinate chiefs under the Akyem Abuakwa Paramountcy.

Yaw Oppong is also a highly productive writer, having authored many articles and a book, including his latest publication, Contemporary Trends in the Law of Immovable Property in Ghana, as well as an online article titled “Domesticating Dispute Resolution Arising from Petroleum Agreements in Ghana.”

For many years, he has served as a consistent expert providing insights on a wide range of legal topics and is a recognized figure across multiple media channels in Ghana.

He earned a first-class degree in Law from the University of Ghana and successfully became a Barrister-at-Law after graduating from the Ghana School of Law in Makola, Accra, Ghana.

Yaw Oppong possesses a Master’s Degree in Oil and Gas Law (LLM) from the Faculty of Law at the University of Ghana, Legon.
