Proposed Expansion of George Park and Ride in Plymouth
Plans to enhance the capacity of the George Park and Ride are currently under consideration. A proposal has been submitted to Plymouth City Council to increase the number of parking spaces by 83, aiming to address the growing demand for car parking in the area. The scheme involves reconfiguring parts of the existing layout and removing some grass verges and islands within the northern and eastern sections of the site.
At present, the park and ride offers approximately 708 parking spaces, including 14 disabled bays, six for parents with children, and four electric vehicle charging points. However, the facility often operates at full capacity, prompting the council to seek solutions to ease the pressure on the site.
If approved, the expansion would also involve relocating lighting columns, adjusting drainage infrastructure, and installing new substations. Perimeter fencing is set to be altered as part of efforts to futureproof the site, with the addition of 83 more spaces.
The George Park and Ride is located in the north of Plymouth, between Tavistock Road, Morgan Road, Plymbridge Road, and Olympic Way. It serves as a crucial commuter hub, connecting residents to the wider transport network across the city.
A separate aspect of the proposal includes converting a currently segregated cycle path on Plymbridge Road into a shared-use route. The council is seeking confirmation from the local planning authority that these changes fall within its permitted development rights, which could mean a full planning application is not required.
The application falls under section 192 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990, allowing applicants to confirm that proposed works are lawful. Most of the work would be carried out within the existing park and ride boundary.
If granted, the expanded facility would better serve commuters using the dedicated bus lanes and footways that link The George to the wider transport network across Plymouth. The overall Woolwell to The George scheme aims to remove an existing bottleneck, reducing queuing on this section of the northern corridor. The scheme is divided into three phases:
Phase 1
Includes walking and cycling improvements on Woolwell Road, new cycling facilities on Tavistock Road (north of Woolwell Roundabout), and a new signalised junction where Woolwell Crescent meets Tavistock Road.
Phase 2
Involves replacing Woolwell Roundabout with a signalised junction, widening Tavistock Road, and improving walking and cycling facilities.
Phase 3
Focuses on expanding the George Park and Ride to provide extra parking spaces.
Plymouth City Council planners will determine the fate of all the new applications listed below at a later date. Below is the full latest list of planning applications that have been submitted this week.
