Former Michigan star Gavin Brindley is on the move. The Columbus Blue Jackets traded him to the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday in a deal that sent Charlie Coyle, Miles Wood, a 2025 third-round pick, and a conditional 2027 second-round pick to Columbus. Brindley, a 2023 second-round pick, was the centerpiece of the return. Colorado announced the move with excitement, signaling their belief in his future.
Brindley’s NHL Journey
Brindley, a dynamic forward listed at 5-foot-9, 170 pounds, played two standout seasons at the University of Michigan, where he tallied 91 points in 81 games from 2022 to 2024. He was named Big Ten Player of the Year and an All-American in 2024 after leading the Wolverines with 25 goals and 28 assists. Known for his relentless motor, elite edge work, and offensive versatility, Brindley was a fan favorite in Ann Arbor and helped power Michigan to consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances.
After signing his entry-level contract with Columbus in April 2024, Brindley made his NHL debut on April 16 in a game against the Carolina Hurricanes. While he didn’t record a point in that lone appearance, he gained valuable professional experience before finishing the season with the AHL’s Cleveland Monsters. In 52 games with Cleveland, Brindley registered six goals and 11 assists, adding four playoff games to cap his first professional season.
For Michigan fans, the trade is a reminder of Brindley’s rapid rise from college star to highly regarded NHL prospect. Though still early in his career, the move to Colorado presents a fresh opportunity in a high-powered Avalanche organization known for developing skilled forwards.
