Emerging Agricultural Leaders Compete for Prestige in 2025 Young Farmer of the Year

A promising young farmer from Garies in the Northern Cape has been named as one of the finalists in the 2025 Young Farmer of the Year competition. This prestigious event, now in its 24th year, highlights the dedication and innovation of young agricultural leaders who are driving the future of farming.

The competition has reached its final stage, with six outstanding individuals vying for the title. Each finalist brings a unique background and approach to agriculture, showcasing the diversity and depth of talent within the industry.

Profiles of the Finalists

Tiaan Barkhuizen, 33, hails from Garies in the Northern Cape. He manages a Dorper stud and engages in commercial farming of Boer goats and sheep. His work reflects a deep commitment to livestock breeding and sustainable practices.

Niel Booyens, 28, is based in Belfast. He farms with cattle, sheep, and crops such as maize, soybeans, and oats. His multifaceted approach to farming demonstrates a strong understanding of both animal husbandry and crop cultivation.

Thian Heyns, 29, from Clocolan in the Free State, focuses on Sussex stud and commercial cattle, along with crops like maize, soya beans, sunflowers, and wheat. His expertise spans multiple areas of agriculture, highlighting his versatility and adaptability.

Martin van Jaarsveld, 30, comes from Greylingstad in Mpumalanga. While details about his specific farming activities are not provided, his inclusion in the final highlights his potential and contributions to the sector.

Willem van der Merwe, 36, and Francois du Toit, 34, from Chrissiesmeer in Mpumalanga, have formed a partnership in crop farming. Judging Process and Prizes

A national judging panel will visit each finalist’s farm between July 14 and 18, 2025. The evaluation will focus on management ability, technical expertise, and financial control, among other key criteria. These assessments are crucial in determining the top three finalists.

The winners will be announced following the farm visits, with the ultimate winner revealed during the TLU SA Congress on September 10, 2025. The prize package includes a brand-new BYD bakkie for a year, courtesy of Hatfield Motor Group, and a R50,000 cash prize, thanks to Manitou. Santam will also provide cash prizes for the runner-up and third-place finalist.
