From Shyness to 16,000 Business Cards

A Unique Collection That Stands Out

Many people enjoy collecting various items, from matchbooks and coins to baseball or football cards. However, there are some collections that go beyond the usual. Joey Burmeister is one of those individuals who has carved out a unique niche for himself in the world of collecting.

“I don’t know anyone else that does this,” Joey admitted. His collection consists of over 16,000 business cards, which he keeps organized in 17 binders. Each card tells a story, and for Joey, it’s more than just a collection—it’s a passion that has grown over the years.

Joey’s journey into collecting business cards began during his high school years. “I used to collect teddy bears when I was a kid, and then I just thought I got the idea like I might start collecting business cards,” he explained. What started as a simple hobby quickly evolved into a full-fledged obsession.

The dedication required to maintain such a vast collection is impressive. “When I get a duplicate, I have to look through 17 binders to make sure I have them,” Joey said. Despite the effort, he has no favorites. “It’s just amazing how much I collect over the years,” he said, adding, “It’s too hard to pick because I love them all so much.”

For Joey, the joy of collecting business cards goes beyond the numbers. When asked what he feels looking at all these cards, his answer was immediate: “Joy.” The emotional connection he has with his collection is evident in every detail.

Social media played a significant role in expanding his collection. “I put the call out for cards on social media, and the community showed up in spades,” Joey said. His mailbox looked like a networking conference had exploded. “This is all the business cards I’ve collected so far, just after putting that call out on social media,” he said proudly, pointing to a box filled with 1,283 cards.

Beyond the cards, Joey also receives handwritten notes from people who support his passion. “People send me notes too to encourage me to collect more,” he added, showing off the messages he’s kept over the years.

Business cards serve as more than just a way to exchange contact information—they’re also a perfect conversation starter. For Joey, they played a crucial role in helping him overcome his shyness. “In high school, I was shy. And then when I started collecting business cards, it helped me get out of my shell, to blossom,” he said.

The saying goes, “It’s not about the cards you’re dealt, but how you play them.” Joey Burmeister plays his hand perfectly, turning a simple hobby into something truly remarkable.

As part of our contribution to his collection, we handed him a business card. “Good one to add to your deck?” we asked. “Yes!” he said, smiling.
