Young athletes delivered stellar performances at the just-concluded fourth FRCN Lagos Children Sports Fiesta, which brought together junior secondary schools at the Legacy Pitch of the National Stadium in Surulere.

The competition created a carnival-like atmosphere for excited school children over the weekend.

Coach Wale Hassan, who led his squad Prellar College to victory in the boys’ category of the five-a-side football championship, said he could not wait for the next edition to come around.

Prellar College beat favourites Kings College 2-1 via penalties after a 1-1 draw in normal time to emerge as champions, while Peculiar Heights piped Mighty Pillars 1-0 to win the bronze medal.

Mighty Pillars secured redemption in the girls’ category, beating Hellifest 3-0 to win gold, while Peculiar Heights defeated Ikpea College 5-4 to win the school’s second bronze medal on the day.

The fourth edition of the FRCN Sports Fiesta also featured athletics, with Favour Igwe of Ikpea winning the girls’ gold medal in the 100 metres, while Ark of the Lord’s Chinedu Umeh breasted the tape first to secure the boys’ ultimate prize.

The one-day competition ran with the able support of Haji Gafar Liameed, founder of 36 Lion FC and chairman of the Lagos State Football Association.

One of the pioneers of women’s football in Nigeria, Ayo Omidiran, continued her support for the game by donating the girls’ trophy.
