The “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” has passed the House last month by a narrow 215-214 vote and advanced to the Senate. A Fox News Poll in June shows 53% of Americans oppose the bill. A separate Quinnipiac Poll also found 53% of voters oppose the bill.
The legislation includes approximately $700 billion in Medicaid cuts, likely resulting in coverage losses for 8.6 million people. As the 2026 midterm elections approach, both parties have intensified efforts to mobilize voters around the bill.
House Republicans characterize Democratic opposition as support for tax increases and Medicaid funding for undocumented immigrants. They claim Democrats back the largest tax hikes in modern U.S. history.
Republicans argue the legislation does not directly reduce benefits but reinforces eligibility standards. The proposed changes require adults to verify at least 80 hours per month of employment or community service and implement stricter verification protocols.
Public opinion has complicated the debate. While many Americans have supported maintaining or increasing Medicaid funding, a majority have favored work requirements.
GOP strategist John Feehery said, “The tax cuts are important, but most voters don’t really think that their taxes are going to go up.”
Feehery added, “If you think gutting Medicaid is making sure that illegal immigrants don’t get Medicaid, let’s have that fight.”
House Democrats assert that Republicans are harming public health and low-income families while benefiting wealthy taxpayers.
House Republicans have emphasized tax cuts, while House Democrats have criticized Medicaid reductions. Democratic strategist Jon Reinish said, “There are aspects of this bill that are a threat to your daily life, in terms of your income, your financial security, your household expenses.” He added, “That’s what’s going to get voters to tune in, especially going into a midterm year.”
