Major Infrastructure Development Begins at Mohammed V International Airport
Construction has officially commenced on a new passenger terminal at Mohammed V International Airport, representing a significant step forward in Morocco’s plan to position Casablanca as a top-tier global aviation hub by 2030. This development is part of a broader initiative aimed at enhancing the country’s air transport infrastructure and strengthening its role in international connectivity.
The Moroccan Airports Authority (ONDA) announced the start of excavation works, highlighting the transition from the design phase to actual construction. This marks a crucial moment for the project, which is considered one of the most ambitious infrastructure developments in the country. The terminal is expected to significantly boost the airport’s capacity and improve the travel experience for passengers.
With a total investment of 15 billion dirhams ($1.5 billion), the new terminal is designed to accommodate 20 million additional passengers annually, bringing the airport’s total capacity to 35 million passengers per year. This expansion aligns with the national “Airports 2030” strategy, which focuses on innovation, sustainability, and global connectivity.
Following a public tender process, STAM, a leading Moroccan construction company, was awarded the site preparation contract. The work is expected to take eight months, with the terminal itself scheduled to open by 2029. The project will be designed by an international consortium comprising Ala Concept, RSHP Architects, and Egis Bâtiments International. These firms have previously worked on renowned terminals in cities such as London, Madrid, and Geneva.
The new terminal is set to introduce a range of advanced features, including a seamless digital travel experience and the integration of a high-speed rail station. This will allow passengers to travel between Casablanca and Rabat in just 30 minutes, and reach Marrakech within an hour. Such improvements are expected to enhance the airport’s appeal and support its growing role as a key transportation hub.
Casablanca is poised to reinforce its status as a continental and global aviation center, connecting Europe, Africa, and the Americas. This is particularly relevant given the anticipated expansion of Royal Air Maroc, Morocco’s national carrier. The airport’s enhanced infrastructure will play a vital role in supporting this growth and attracting more international flights.
To ensure the highest standards of execution, ONDA launched a Call for Expressions of Interest (AMI) earlier this year. The initiative received 27 bids from both Moroccan and international consortiums specializing in complex airport infrastructure. The official tendering process for the main construction contract is set to begin in July, with the final award expected by the end of the year.
This project is also closely linked to Morocco’s preparations for co-hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup. The new terminal is seen as a gateway that will increase the country’s international visibility, boost tourism, and stimulate economic growth. As the construction progresses, it will serve as a symbol of Morocco’s commitment to modernization and global engagement through its aviation sector.
