A retired police dog has found a new purpose in life, serving as a guardian and emotional support companion for her former handler’s wife. Donja, a seven-year-old German Shepherd, spent three and a half years with the Ministry of Defence Police before being transferred to support operations in Hampshire and the Thames Valley. Her service was marked by dedication and loyalty, but her career came to an end when she was diagnosed with spondylosis, a degenerative spinal condition.
Instead of being left without a home, Donja was adopted by her former handler, PC Ash Collins, and his wife, Heidi. Heidi, who lives with multiple chronic health conditions including endometriosis, fibromyalgia, and polycystic ovary syndrome, now relies on Donja not only for companionship but also for emotional and physical support.
Donja, affectionately known as “Donna Kebab” by the family, has developed an instinctive ability to sense when Heidi is unwell. She rarely leaves her side, often following her closely and staying by her bed when she is in pain. Despite her back issues, which make it difficult for her to jump onto the bed, Donja finds ways to comfort Heidi.
“She knows when I’m in pain and will hop up to snuggle with me,” Heidi said. “It’s amazing how she can sense when I need her.”
The bond between Heidi and Donja deepened after recent surgery, during which Donja remained close by, offering comfort and reassurance. Heidi described how Donja helps lift her spirits, sometimes bringing her a toy or nuzzling in for a cuddle when she needs a smile.
The Legacy of Service and Support
Donja’s career included patrols at military sites such as RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, where she played a vital role in security operations. Now, she is supported by the Thin Blue Paw Foundation, a charity that provides care and assistance to retired police dogs. The foundation covers Donja’s medical expenses and ensures she receives regular medication and food through its partnership with Barking Heads.
Kieran Stanbridge, chairman of the Thin Blue Paw Foundation, emphasized the importance of ensuring retired police dogs like Donja enjoy their later years without suffering from the injuries they sustained during their service.
“After everything Donja has done, it’s only fair that she gets to enjoy her retirement pain-free,” he said.
