Ford unveiled official images of its facelifted mid-size SUV, the Territory. The Territory has been a popular choice in various emerging markets, including Latin America, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. In China, it is marketed as the Equator Sport. This updated model draws significant design cues from its Chinese counterpart and will eventually offer a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version.
The Territory is primarily manufactured in China, which has become a key production hub for Ford’s global market strategy. While the reveal was initially expected to take place in Argentina, the actual debut occurred in neighboring Brazil. Let’s examine how this facelift enhances the competitiveness of the globally popular Territory.
Revamped Exterior Design
The refreshed Territory features a more sophisticated and contemporary exterior. The previous dual headlamp configuration has been replaced with sleek, single-unit headlamps and a sportier bumper design. The front grille features a distinctive design that sets it apart from its Chinese counterpart.
While the Chinese model opts for an all-black grille, the Territory emphasizes luxury with chrome accents and body-colored inserts. Glossy door handles and new 19-inch wheels complete the upscale look, which is likely to appeal to a broader range of consumers.
The interior layout resembles that of the Chinese Equator Sport, featuring an integrated digital instrument cluster and infotainment system. Ford has upgraded both the materials and finish quality for a more premium cabin feel. The Territory also comes equipped with modern amenities, including climate control, ventilated front seats, wireless phone charging, a 360-degree camera, and adaptive cruise control.
Efficient Powertrains and Future PHEV Option
The updated Territory shares its powertrain options with the Chinese model. In key markets like Brazil, it has a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, producing 170 horsepower. Some regions will also offer a more powerful 1.8-liter turbo engine, generating 185 horsepower, which will be paired with the 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox.
Ford’s plans to introduce a plug-in hybrid version are particularly noteworthy. Given that the Chinese Equator Sport already offers a PHEV variant, we can expect the Territory PHEV to follow suit shortly. This move aligns with Ford’s strategy to meet the growing consumer demand for efficient and environmentally friendly vehicles.
Ford is set to launch the refreshed Territory in Latin American markets this July, with plans to expand to the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and other regions soon afterward. Industry watchers are eager to see how this update will impact the Territory’s already strong global
performance
