Flint Library Veteran Ready to Lead as Director

Leadership Transition at Gloria Coles Flint Public Library

The Gloria Coles Flint Public Library has announced a leadership change, naming Ann Manko as its interim executive director. Manko took on the role on Friday, July 11, following the departure of Taliah Abdullah, who had served as the library’s executive director since July 2023.

During her time in the position, Abdullah focused on advancing the library’s mission of equity, inclusion, and deeper community engagement. She introduced various programs and services that aimed to make the library a more accessible and welcoming space for all residents of Flint.

Manko is no stranger to the library, having spent over two decades working there. She previously held the position of adult services collection development librarian and has been involved in several initiatives designed to expand access to diverse materials, modernize library services, and build stronger relationships with local organizations.

With a Master of Library and Information Science from Wayne State University and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Michigan–Dearborn, Manko has demonstrated strong leadership skills throughout her career. Her work has been recognized in areas such as outreach and programming. Notably, she played a key role in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program and was instrumental in creating inclusive events like the Fiction Only Book Club.

“I’m honored and excited to step into the role of Interim Director of the Gloria Coles Flint Public Library during this time of transition,” Manko said in a statement. “I look forward to serving the residents of Flint, supporting our talented and dedicated staff, and continuing to provide inclusive, collaborative, community-driven programming and services.”

The library’s Board of Trustees will begin the process of searching for a permanent executive director later this year. In the meantime, Manko will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the library. She will also work closely with staff, patrons, and partners to ensure a smooth transition and maintain the high level of service that the community has come to expect.

As the library moves forward under Manko’s leadership, there is optimism about the future of the institution. Her experience, dedication, and vision are seen as valuable assets during this period of change. The community looks forward to continued innovation and a commitment to serving the needs of all residents.
