WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Riverfest wrapped up with a splash on Saturday morning as families lined the east side of the Arkansas River for the annual free fishing derby, a community event made possible through a partnership with the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks.

Held between the Douglas and Lewis Street bridges, the event required no Riverfest button, no fishing license, and no gear, making it completely accessible to anyone wanting to cast a line.

“This goes on every year, and we have some amazing partners,” said Brianna Munk, president and CEO of Wichita Festivals. “We’re truly excited to have all the kids, the families, the adults, everyone down here casting reels and having fun.”

Fishing poles, bait, and other supplies were provided at no cost, although guests were welcome to bring their own equipment. The Department of Wildlife and Parks also offered tutorials for beginners. About 70 rods were made available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Sponsors included Cabela’s, Bass Pro Shops, and Four Hills Distribution, helping turn the riverbank into a hub of weekend fun. Prizes were awarded for various catches.

Munk said the event’s purpose was to create a welcoming space for everyone to enjoy the festival, even those who couldn’t buy a button. “We stand here with you, and we want you to have fun as well,” she said. “Having this type of event just brings the community all together.”
