First Lady Urges Global Unity Against Breast Cancer

Pakistan, August 13 – First Lady Aseefa Bhutto Zardari emphasized the need for collaborative efforts among government bodies, medical experts, media outlets, and local communities to increase awareness and fight breast cancer, which is the most prevalent type of cancer among women in Pakistan and the highest in Asia.

She expressed these comments during a meeting with Omer Aftab, Founder and Honorary CEO of Pink Ribbon Pakistan, at Aiwan-e-Sadr, according to a press release from the President’s Secretariat Press Wing.

Emphasizing that one out of every nine Pakistani women is vulnerable, the first lady cautioned that late diagnosis results in thousands of deaths each year.

She mentioned that survival rates go beyond 90 percent if the illness is detected early and emphasized, “Every woman, no matter where she resides, should have access to prompt screening, diagnosis, and care.”

Aseefa Bhutto Zardari highlighted the importance of prioritizing women’s health nationally, focusing on prevention, early identification, and care. She advocated for increasing access to breast cancer services in remote rural regions, challenging cultural stigmas that cause delays in seeking help, and encouraging mobile mammography, community engagement, and the participation of male family members to address social barriers.

She called on all involved parties, such as the media, teachers, and religious figures, to lead a country-wide campaign to raise awareness, promoting early identification and prompt medical treatment.

Praising Pink Ribbon Pakistan for its work in raising awareness and conducting screenings, the first lady commended its efforts to set up the nation’s first specialized breast cancer hospital.
