WAIKIKI, Hawaii (KHON2) — An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of a building fire in the Waikiki area.
According to the Honolulu Fire Department, the 911 call came in shortly after 1 a.m. on Friday, June 27, when flames were seen coming out of the sixth floor of a building on Prince Edward Street.
HFD units arrived at the scene minutes later before heading up to the sixth floor and forcing entry into the unit.
When firefighters entered, officials said they found construction materials burning on the balcony.
“Firefighters initially used a water extinguisher to bring the fire under control while firefighting operations were being set up. Firefighters also checked units above and next to the fire unit to ensure the fire did not spread,” HFD said in a news release.

Officials said units brought the fire under control by 1:19 a.m. and fully extinguished the flames minutes later at 1:23 a.m.
A fire investigator is working to determine the cause and origin of the event.
According to HFD, those who discover a fire should keep the doors to the fire area closed to minimize fire spread in the structure.

HFD said if the door is left open, “the structure would have suffered an exponentially greater amount of damage.”
