FCT Poll: APC Female Chair Aspirant Pledges Health and Education Focus

An aspiring female chairman from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) party for Kuje Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Hajiya Aisha Yakubu, has pledged to focus on healthcare and education if elected to lead the council’s operations.

Yakubu, previously the speaker of Kuje Area Council and head of the FCT Area Councils Speakers Forum, made this commitment when speaking with journalists at the state APC headquarters in Abuja on Friday. This occurred after she had collected nomination and expression of interest forms to run for the position of chairman of Kuje Area Council under the APC banner.

She stated that her focus on enhancing health care and supporting various sectors was crucial because of the difficulties, particularly those faced by patients in remote areas who lacked proper access to quality health services.

She emphasized that inadequate access to high-quality healthcare services in rural areas has turned into a significant challenge for those living in these regions. Therefore, she aims to ensure that healthcare becomes available to all village residents throughout the ten wards should she be chosen as the chairperson of the council.

“It’s very concerning that nearly 80 percent of healthcare facilities are in such poor condition during my visit to all ten wards within the Kuje area council. This was when I interacted with both the APC ward leaders and local residents. That’s why, should I be granted the opportunity, I would make improving the health and education sectors a top priority, Lord willing,” she stated.

She highlighted that the condition of the state’s educational sector, particularly primary schools in rural areas within the region, was concerning. She mentioned that many of these institutions were in such poor shape that they made learning more difficult for students.

She mentioned that her government will enhance the agricultural sector by supplying farming resources to rural cultivators to increase food production throughout the council. She noted that Kuje Area Council has historically served as the ‘food basket’ for the Federal Capital Territory.

However, she emphasized that women should participate in seeking electoral positions to help shape societal progress, noting that women typically have the highest voter turnout in elections.

“Women shouldn’t just be recognized for their strong voting power; they should also have a place at the decision-making table where they can influence societal changes. That’s precisely why we’re advocating for more women to be elected—not just to represent the Kuje Area Council, but to contribute to national progress,” she stated.

The aspiring chairman, recognizing the party’s choice to select its nominee via consensus, stated that politics should not be seen as an all-or-nothing endeavor. They expressed their readiness to back whichever candidate secures the party’s endorsement with the aim of ensuring victory for the APC in the upcoming election.
