New Superintendent Named for Fayette County Public Schools

Fayette County Public Schools (FCPS) has announced the appointment of a new superintendent, marking a significant step in the district’s ongoing efforts to enhance educational outcomes for students. The news was shared on social media, where FCPS highlighted Dr. Don McPherson as the individual chosen for this important role.

Dr. McPherson brings a wealth of experience and a diverse background to his new position. He has worked in various capacities within the education sector, including roles as a classroom teacher, coach, principal, adjunct professor, federal programs director, and even as a superintendent. His career has spanned both urban and rural school districts across Alabama and Tennessee, demonstrating his adaptability and commitment to education.

In addition to his work in the education field, Dr. McPherson has also gained valuable experience in the corporate world. He spent 11 years working with two Fortune 500 companies, where he received top honors for excellence in sales and marketing. This unique blend of experiences has provided him with a broader perspective on leadership, communication, and performance-driven results—skills that he continues to apply in his current role.

Before joining Fayette County, Dr. McPherson served as a middle school math teacher in Franklin County, Tennessee. This recent experience allows him to connect more closely with the day-to-day challenges and opportunities faced by educators and students.

“I am deeply honored to join the Fayette County Public Schools family,” said Dr. McPherson. “My mission has always been to help every student reach their highest potential, and I look forward to working alongside our dedicated educators, families, and community to ensure that happens here in Fayette County.”

Dr. McPherson’s leadership experience includes serving as the superintendent of Coffee County Schools in Alabama. During his tenure, he guided the district through its first-ever accreditation process, led infrastructure upgrades, and oversaw an operating budget of $25 million. Notably, he maintained a graduation rate in the mid-90s, a testament to his ability to manage complex systems while prioritizing student success.

His appointment is seen as a positive development for FCPS, as the district seeks to build on its strengths and address any challenges it may face. With his extensive background and proven track record, Dr. McPherson is well-positioned to lead the district into a promising future.

As the new superintendent begins his role, the community is eager to see how his vision and leadership will shape the direction of Fayette County Public Schools. His focus on student achievement, combined with his diverse professional experience, offers a strong foundation for continued growth and improvement.
